There are 276,000 people in Ireland that know Autism will be part of their journey everyday. The number of people diagnosed with Autism (72,000) would fill the Aviva stadium. The number of people impacted by the diagnosis would fill the Aviva stadium 5 times over.
A person with autism may appear able, verbal, but socially withdrawn or "odd". Or they may remain locked in their own world, speechless and unable to communicate.
Demand among parents of autistic children for appropriate education services has grown in recent years due to increasing awareness that, with early intervention, many children can be rescued from the worst effects of the condition and be given the tools and mechanisms needed to cope with everyday life. However, the services available do not meet the demand of the increased diagnosis.
In December 2017, my little boy Donnacha was diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum disorder). Since then I have seen the difficulties and lack of services available for Autistic children. The services available have waiting lists of up to two years, which complete goes against the ethos of "Early" intervention. It is a long and difficult path for parents to get the help they need.
On that note, Cuisle in St. Brigids Primary School offer an excellent Early Intervention Service to 24 local children in Midleton. However, a lot of the additional trips and services needed to assist these children become more comfortable with social interactions and situations are funded through parents and donations. To help Cuisle offer more to future students, my Brother -in-law Kieran Ryan is bravely going to cycle the 120KM Ring of Clare on the 27th July to raise some funds- so any sponsorship would be greatly appreciated.
Kieran also completed this cycle in 2018 and a cheque for €2,100 was given to Cuisle (The profile picture for this page is the picture of the card the Cuisle class made for Kieran to say thank you. ) The money in 2018 was spent on taking 12 children swimming for 6 weeks, a task which is way outside of their comfort zone and also for Floor Maps and games to help the children with Occupational Therapy and balance.
This is such a great cause and I have included some pics of Donnacha that his teacher provided throughout the year, just to show how wonderful this unit really is. Without this, we would struggle to get Donnacha the intervention and help he needs.
