A Cuddle Cot, is a cooling system designed to preserve a baby's body in the parent's hospital room; allowing the family to spend more time with their baby. It was created in the UK, and today is internationally recognized. The cooling pad fits into any bassinet, and with an insulated hose it is quietly cooled. The system costs approximately $3000. Worldwide, there are over 700 CuddleCots in use, and in 2014 the CuddleCot was launched in the US and Canada. There are currently 3 CuddleCots in hospitals in the state of North Carolina. With your help, we hope to raise enough funds for the purchase of one CuddleCot for Duke University Hospital. What a perfect gift to donate. The gift of time! With your help we can allow other families, that have to face infant death, more time to bond with their baby, memorize every detail about them, give other family members an opportunity to see them, and allow everyone a chance to say goodbye without feeling rushed. Families can have a sense of closure before they have to send their baby away.

Hello! We are Tyler and Nellie Dawson, on March 18 2016 our world flipped upside down when our Son Gabriel “Gabe” James was born still at Duke University Hospital.

I have a blog already started about our Journey with Gabe which you can read here Our Journey with Gabe to give you insight on what we went through in our 26 weeks with Gabe.
To give a brief story Gabe had a few birth defects that would have affected his way of living if he would have made it to birth and to cause him to only live a few minutes, hours, days, and a 1% chance of even making it to see his first birthday. Which him even making it to birth was only a 10% chance. We knew all these odds and still gave him a chance, if he would have made it there would have been a long hospital stay, surgeries, machines and the list goes on.
Tyler and I are the kind of people that no matter what we face in life we still want to help others. A few days after we lost Gabe, Tyler’s mom came across something called a “Cuddle Cot”, she began to explain what it was and we knew that would be something we would be interested in getting for Duke for other parents that have to go through such tragic experience.
March 17th I was told Gabe no longer had a heart beat, we went to Duke where they put me in a room and started giving me medicine to induce labor, that was around 9 PM, at 10:45 AM I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. I was so scared to see him not knowing what he would look like, it took me a little while to get the courage up to look at him and hold him. He looked just like Tyler and had the cutest little face and nose. As time passed his little body started to change, he got smaller his body was dehydrating. They told us we could have him until midnight (we wanted to have an autopsy done to see what else was going on) by 9 that night our hearts hurt so bad seeing how much and fast his body was changing we knew it was time for us to let him go. At 11:07 is when they look him away, watching a staff member and nurse take your baby and put him in a little box and carry him away has got to be one of the hardest images to see.

We thank everyone so much for reading our story, and hearing our mission. We hope that you will partner with us on raising these funds. If you would like to find out more about the CuddleCot you can explore these links:
