Two weeks following the passing of my grandfather, there was a water leak from the refrigerator water line that flooded the basement where my grandmother lives. As we began to deal with the cleanup and removal of flooring, we found the house to be riddled with mold. This was an incidental finding, but we found that the mold was from water getting into the basement from poor drainage off of the roof. When it rains, it pours in the basement. Now, we are having to remove all flooring, remove drywall, treat for mold, seal the basement, get a new roof, and install gutters. The roof actually has a large hole in it currently, with a tarp covering. A tree fell on the roof but the insurance company at the time would not cover the damage. My grandfather did not have any life insurance and my grandmother used all of her life savings to fund the passing of her husband. She is staying upstairs with me and my husband until the work is complete. My husband and I are using all of our savings to make the basement safe for her to live. We are reluctantly asking for help. For those of you who know Mama J and knew Pa, they always did everything for everyone without asking for anything in return. Mama J deserves to live out the rest of her life with dignity and in a safe space.
