Help Lorri and Max after dog attack

Donation protected
On Sunday, Dec. 20th, around 4:00 pm my mom, Lorraine Song, and her dog Max were out for a walk in their neighborhood.  They were approached by a loose female juvenile pit bull, who attacked Max, literally ripping him open.  The dog lunged at Max, grabbing him, shaking him, and pulling my mom to the ground.  My mom was severely bitten on her hands as she tried to protect her dog, especially her left hand.  Fortunately a neighbor heard her screaming and came out to help.  He turned his hose on the dog and was able to chase her off. Max was ripped open and had a huge bite wound on his back.  Not to be too graphic but his intestines were outside of his body!  Max had to have emergency surgery and has since been brought to a 24 hour emergency vet care center.  My mom has multiple deep gashes on her left hand and a couple on her right hand.  She also has to be treated for rabies since the pit bull has not been caught.  She had to have shots at the wound site (she said about 2-3 shots around each gash) and a shot in her arm.  In total she had over 20 shots at the initial treatment, most of them in her hand.  She also has to go back for several more treatments which, thankfully are only the one shot in the arm.  Since my mom's hand is out of commission for a while she will not be able to care for Max on her own once he is released, which could be in the next few days.  At this point the big concern is infection, for both Mom and Max, and possible long term nerve damage.  My mom will be staying with her friend who will also help her care for Max, until she is able to do so on her own.  Both Mom and Max have a fairly good prognosis, but are pretty traumatized by the whole thing!  She has been having recurring nightmares and both are still in a lot of pain. Though she is retired and on a fixed income, Max is her beloved companion and they are extremely attached to each other.  As you can guess, the cost so far for Max is over $6000, and will go up depending on how long he needs to stay in 24 hour care.  The cost for the emergency surgery was about $3000 and the 24 hour care center is about $1000 per day.  Max may be released on Christmas Day but will need follow-up care and both will need rehab therapy.  We're really not sure what the total costs will be, but it is already far beyond what she can truly afford.  We would be so grateful for any help my mom and Max could get with this!  They have had a difficult week and would be so encouraged and humbled by the generosity of others!
