Steve’s long road to recovery
This picture was taken when Steve and I saw Dave Matthew’s for the first time, it was a great concert one of the best we’ve seen!!Up until covid it was our yearly ritual to catch The band anytime they came to FL.
On the morning of August 15th, 2021 I woke up like any other day, only that day would turn out to be one of the hardest of my life. At 840 am I found Steve on my couch barely responsive, I managed to coax him into the bedroom thinking, hoping, he was just sick. Seeing him in the light I knew he was in trouble. Upon walking out my front door and seeing the blood on my doorstep I knew I had to call for help. The medics who picked him up were fantastic and so kind. Within an hour of being brought into the ER we had a diagnosis and Steve’s fight would began. He had fallen sometime through the night hitting the back of his head. He fractured both temporal bones and had a bleed in his frontal lobe that extended into his right temporal lobe and bruising in his left temporal lobe. His right eardrum ruptured which allowed for some of the pressure from the bleed to diminish, so what I thought was possibly vomit in his ear turned out to be blood coming from the bleed in his head. We spent the next 28 hours in the ER waiting for a neuro icu bed to open up. Finally that call came today (8/16/2021) at 1330 and they were able to transport him to the appropriate unit. As of now he is stable but guarded. He is on meds to prevent seizures, lower his BP, antibiotics for the fractures, hypertonic saline to raise his sodium and help ease the swelling in his brain. The bleeding is no longer active, but he sleeps most of the time. When he’s awake he is confused and has a constant headache. He recognizes me, but can’t remember my name.
He has been my rock for 11 years and now he is in an icu bed trying to heal and find his way back. I’m writing this because I find myself realizing that 1/2 of my equation has been taken off the board…1/2 of our income just stopped and I’m realizing the struggle we have ahead of us. He has a long road to recovery and while he is out of commission I have to make our ends meet somehow.
I know with COVID times are harder than they have ever been, but every little bit helps. If you can’t donate please share this link, keep him in your thoughts and send positive healing energy his way. Thank you for taking time to read this.
