Our niece, Crystal Self, is a registered nurse of 15 years in the Shreveport/Bossier City area. Four years ago, she underwent surgery for a benign tumor at the base of her brain.

The surgery was not expected to be life-threatening, but she experienced swelling of her brain, which led to her suffering a stroke. She lapsed into a coma.

After awaking from the coma, Crystal, who is currently bed-ridden, has experienced numerous physical setbacks but has fought for the last four years to recover and is now communicating and expressing her desire to keep fighting for herself and her two daughters.

Crystal, 42, has experienced difficulty receiving the care she needs as healthcare facilities refuse to treat her due to her health insurance. One facility told her mother, "We can't take her because we'd only make $50 a day off her."

The healthcare roadblocks have mounted so much that Crystal has been bounced from five different facilities over the past four years. She is now in South Texas with her mother seeking therapy that could help her regain her speech and mobility.

The family has resisted seeking assistance in the form of donations, but as the therapy and rehabilitative care Crystal needs have been delayed and personal funds have been nearly depleted due to the insurance provider's inability or refusal to assist in the recovery, the time has come to reach out for help.

Crystal is ready for therapy. Her physician is confident that she can make great strides if given the opportunity for proper rehabilitation.

Since facilities refuse to take in Crystal, she will now receive physical therapy, speech therapy, and other rehabilitation at home. The treatment will come at a high out-of-pocket cost.
