Cruz y su familia necesitan de tu ayuda

Los que me conocen saben lo importante que es mi familia en mi vida y los que conocen a mi familia saben lo unida y solidaria que es. Algunos me habrán oído hablar sobre mi tía, Cruz Elena, o incluso la habrán conocido en diversos espacios o momentos de la vida. Ella es como una segunda madre para mí y siempre ha sido una persona fundamental en mi vida.

Para aquellos de ustedes que no saben, en 2015, mi tía Cruz fue diagnosticada con Carcinoma Adenoide Quístico, un tipo de cáncer raro que afecta a su paladar y las glándulas salivales. Después de una ardua ronda inicial de varias cirugías y radioterapia, mi tía terminó hospitalizada por varias semanas pues la radiación causó graves quemaduras en su boca, diversas infecciones y una afección en el oído que dañó de manera permanente su equilibrio. A pesar de ese largo camino, en el 2016 celebramos el hecho de que logró quedar libre de cáncer, aunque a partir de allí ya no logró mantener su autonomía completa para poder hablar y poder trabajar.

Desafortunadamente, el pasado mes de abril de 2023, recibimos la noticia de que el cáncer había re aparecido y que además se había extendido a sus pulmones. En mayo se sometió a otra cirugía para extirpar los tumores que habían vuelto a aparecer en la boca y ahora va a iniciar una nueva fase de radioterapia. Esta última cirugía le dejó un dolor neural permanente muy agudo, para el que tuvo que recurrir a terapias y medicamentos para manejar el dolor, que son bastante costosos. A la vez, en estos últimos meses, ha estado recibiendo varios tratamientos paralelos a sus medicamentos para ayudar a elevar su sistema inmune y moderar su dolor. Son esenciales para su bienestar, tanto físico como mental. Sin ellos, sería más difícil contar con la fuerza y resistencia necesarias para poder afrontar el nuevo tratamiento de radioterapia.

Su hija Daniela, sus hermanos, sobrinos, amigos cercanos y yo misma, hemos estado pagando de nuestro bolsillo sus tratamientos y medicamentos hasta ahora pues en Ecuador, su seguro médico no cubre todos sus tratamientos y medicamentos. Tiene un largo camino por delante y estamos haciendo todo lo que podemos para ayudarla, pero en este momento, necesitamos ayuda para poder costear los gastos de tratamientos, hospitalizaciones y medicamentos. Nuestro objetivo es recaudar tantos fondos como sea posible para ayudar a apoyar el proceso y la recuperación de mi tía al menos para poder costear los gastos necesarios para el tratamiento intensivo que debe recibir los siguientes 15 meses.

Those who know me understand how important my family is in my life, and those who know my family know how close-knit and supportive we are. Some of you might have heard me talk about my aunt, Cruz Elena – some of you may have even met her at some point over the years. She is like a second mother to me and has always been a fundamental person in my life.

For those of you who don't know, in 2015, my tia Cruz was diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, a rare type of cancer that affects her palate and salivary glands. After a challenging initial round of surgeries and radiation therapy, my aunt ended up hospitalized for several weeks in late 2015. The radiation therapy caused severe burns in her mouth, various infections, and an ear condition that permanently damaged her balance. Despite this arduous process, in 2016, we celebrated the fact that she became cancer-free; although from then on, she couldn't maintain her complete autonomy to speak and work.

Unfortunately, in April 2023, we received the news that the cancer had reappeared - and it has now spread to her lungs.

This past May, she underwent another surgery to remove the tumors that had reappeared in her mouth and is now about to start a new phase of radiation therapy. This latest surgery left her with a very sharp, permanent nerve pain, for which she had to resort to various expensive therapies and medications to manage. Additionally, in recent months, she has been receiving various treatments alongside her medications to help boost her immune system and moderate her pain. These treatments are essential for her well-being, both physically and mentally. Without them, it would be much harder for her to muster the strength and resilience needed to face her upcoming radiation therapy.

Her daughter Daniela, siblings, nieces and nephews, close friends and myself have been paying for her treatments and medications out of pocket up until this point. In Ecuador, her health insurance does not cover all her treatments and medicines. She has a long journey ahead and we are doing everything we can to help her – but we need assistance to cover all the expenses for treatments, hospitalizations, and medications. Our goal is to raise as much money as possible to help support my aunt's process and recovery - at least to cover the necessary costs for the intensive treatment she must undergo for the next 15 months.

Thank you for taking the time to read Cruz’s story. Though the road may seem long, Cruz continues to face it with an inordinate amount of strength, resilience, and bravery. Any amount that you can contribute will help pave a clearer path for Cruz on this difficult journey. For this, my family and I will be eternally grateful.
