Cross Country for Karrah

Cycling 2,300 Miles from Warsaw, Indiana to Newport Beach, California

This fund is in honor of Karrah Teruya, a survivor of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Karrah recently received a bone marrow transplant after a relapse with ALL. She has been recovering well from the transplant and is currently working hard to get as healthy as possible. Karrah and her husband, Micah, have the biggest hearts in the world. When I thought up the idea of doing this ride for her, together they chose that 100% of the donations will go towards the k21 foundation which helps with medical and family expenses of those battling cancer in Kosciusko county!

“So many people reached out and supported us through both of my battles with Leukemia, both physically and financially. Our friends took on our burdens and helped carry us through. We are extremely blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by such incredible people and because of that we are in a great spot where where we can just focus on recovery. However, there are many people who struggle through cancer and organizations like K21 are so vital for individuals and families going through this. We understand that not everyone can donate, but you can still be a part of this by signing up to be a bone marrow donor at bethematch.com. We encourage everyone reading this to sign up for be the match. You can literally save someones life just by being a donor. I would not be alive today if it were not for my donor (fortunately for me it was my sister Makayla). All it takes is a quick cheek swab and a trip to the mail box and you’ll be put on the registry.” -Karrah

The Kosciusko County Cancer Care Fund exists for the benefit of Kosciusko County residents to ensure health care services are provided, and to advance prevention and healthy living.

This foundation provides assistance to financially-eligible residents of Kosciusko County who are suffering from cancer. The purpose of the fund is to relieve some of the financial strain that often accompanies that dreaded diagnosis. The assistance provides residents who are in treatment for cancer with household expenses, medicine, medical equipment, transportation and food costs that they would otherwise not be able to afford due to the financial effects of cancer on their household.

We’ve all heard the term “battling cancer” whether related to a loved one, friend or neighbor. If you’ve had the unfortunate experience of facing this battle personally or while helping another, you know that this term exists because cancer is an all-out assault on every aspect of a patient’s life.  Beyond the physical challenges, patients often face job loss, inability to pay bills and difficulty caring for their families.  A strong support system can make all the difference in easing these stresses throughout the treatment process.

Every donation has a simple mission - to reduce the challenges facing cancer patients and their families by financially assisting them during their fight.

In honor of Karrah, I will be riding around 2,300 miles from Kosciusko County to her brother, Seth’s house in California. It will be extremely challenging, but nothing compared to what these warriors are going through. My goal is to ride about 80 miles a day. This will be a solo, self-supported ride with no sag vehicle and little experience. I will be updating this page as I go, and posting to my Strava and Instagram (@donbrand). Thank you everyone for your support!
