Please Help
As local residents, we are trying to raise money to restore and preserve a forgotten and abandoned historic graveyard of the earliest settlers (1700's - 1800's) of Franklin Lakes The graveyard is located by the Crooked Pond near 1115 Franklin Lakes Road, Franklin Lakes, New Jersey.
There are 86 documented burials from 1757 to 1903, include the family names such as Dyckmans, Van Sile, Ackerman, Van Cleve, Van Winkle, Van Houten, Folley, Bartholf, Romine, Burns, Rutan, Bowman, Springer, Colwell, Lictenberg, Winter and Moore.
10 Revolutionary Veterans, 2 Civil War Vets, and 2 men who served in the War of 1812 are buried in this historic graveyard.
If we forget those who have sacrificed their lives to defend our freedom, we risk forgetting that our freedom is worth dying for in the first place.” unknown
Your generous donation will help us restore and preserve this historical treasure so it can be visited by the public.
A broad scope of what needs to be done is:
1. Easement/access path for the public to visit to the cemetery.
2. Clean up the graveyard which entails:
a. Cutting all of the vines and small invasive trees.
b. Move the cut debris to the edge of the property or have it removed.
c. Spray an herbicide to kill off anything that is green.
d. Repeat the herbicide spraying a few times.
e. Assess the graveyard and headstones.
f. Compare what we see to the 1903 map of the documented headstones.
g. Mark and map-out missing headstones.
h. Clean and place the headstones upright and in their spots.
i. Have replacement markers made for all the missing headstones.
j. Have proper markers for the veterans.
k. Have a history of the graveyard made and displayed.
l. Have a sign made for the graveyard.
m. Plant small trees / shrubs so that the graveyard will be create a sun barrier and the weeds/vines will cease to grow as they are now.
n. Continued maintenance will be needed several times a year.
Thank you for your donation
