This is very difficult for me to write, as I’ve always been independent and self-reliant. But given the seriousness, I need to ask for support. I was once healthy, self-sufficient, owning my own property with significant savings. Asking for help has never been something I imagined. Every month of delay increases the risk of permanent nerve damage. I remain a single mom on LTD, medically approved to live in a warm climate, and without active child support. My limitations and quality of life also impact my daughter - something I hope to improve with your support.
MEDICAL JOURNEY
A rare diagnosis required medically necessary orbital implants in 2021 (at 64k CAD). These implants remain in my body and must be removed to prevent further nerve damage, followed by reconstruction of the orbital socket - it was one of several complex reconstructive surgeries I’ve had over the years, all adding to substantial medical expenses.
Complications of surgery include:
* Trigeminal neuralgia (suicide disease) causing bilateral severe, constant electrical facial pain
* Bone and soft tissue decomposition
* Postponed lumbar and cervical spinal surgeries due to autoimmune response to implants
*Failed attempts made by my neurologist and reconstructive surgeon at receiving surgical intervention due to lack of local expertise and collegial protection left me unable to access care.
BACKGROUND
* By 2024, I was offered a group home placement and I was eligible for MAID
* Prolonged delays in receiving appropriate care have contributed to the progression of my condition
* Spent years traveling at my own expense for surgical intervention
* Finally found a specialized out-of-country surgical team
* Surgery has been delayed for months due to OHIP financial approval red herrings/ delays and appeals requiring excessive timelines with no guaranteed approval
CURRENT REALITY
Every smile I show is the result of quiet, unrelenting strength.
* Each morning requires hours of pain management, with episodic pain by afternoon and poor sleep quality
*I have been on prescribed opioid pain medication since 2021
* High sensitivity to light, noise, wind, and climate triggering severe pain
* Sunhat and sunglasses are not optional
* Successful surgery would allow me to manage pain, sleep, and care for my daughter more fully
* Even basic tasks like brushing my teeth or preparing meals can trigger severe pain due to the implants still in place
TREATMENT REQUIRED
Due to delay by Canadian medical system, it is now a complex, staged surgery to remove implants, reconstruct the orbit, and prevent irreversible nerve damage. Without treatment, this condition continues to deteriorate, increasing the risk of further nerve damage and reducing the chance of recovery.
My disability income is not sufficient to cover these specialized surgeries. I have asked, but I am not being provided any family financial assistance.
Attached are images of my surgeons’ letters confirming the urgency and medical necessity of this procedure.
COSTS
* First surgery: $20,665 CAD
* Second surgery: $13,238 CAD
* Additional surgeries may be required
This fundraiser is being overseen with the help of my friend, Debbie Klisouris.
FUNDING REQUEST
All funds raised will go directly toward surgery costs. I am deeply grateful for any support. Even small donations will make a meaningful difference in helping cover these critical surgeries. Your generosity can relieve pain and help my daughter and I have a more stable future.
