Critical ICU care

What do you do when you get a call from your sister sayin “dad is in critical condition, I need you to send me an ambulance to take him to a hospital”?

The Vazquez Retana family dropped everything and rushed their father to the best care possible.

On December 25th Jose Antonio Vazquez,{73}, husband of Lupita Retana, father of Lily, Diana, and Juan Antonio, grandpa of Liam, Sophia, and Lucca, was admitted to the hospital due to difficulty breathing, intense abdominal pain, vomiting, fever and severe weakness. On December 30th he needed to get major surgery to remove the gallbladder and drain a liver abscess and was therefore admitted to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) and has been there since.

Upon hearing of the situation both Lily and Toño (J.A) along with their families immediately knew they had to be there to help their sister, Diana, and be with their elderly parents.

Once in the ICU, due to his diabetic history (+30 yrs) he’s needed 7 dialysis to help his kidneys filter out infection and improve their function. The 2nd day in the ICU his lungs started to fail and had to be intubated. Once intubated parenteral (IV) feeding had to be started and has been needed since. His progress has been monitored by CT scan and blood work; his liver is still showing inflammation and a small fluid buildup in thoracic cavity. Although his white blood cell’s count fluctuates, it/they has/have decreased from 28,000 to 14,000-18,000. Doctor’s advice is to focus on inflammation levels (CRP, CTP) since those have been steadily decreasing.

These weeks have been very stressful and exhaustive for the entire family, whom have been alternating shifts 24/7 and taking turns talking with doctors in regards to his care,specifically when the administrative calls started coming in regarding payment. Although Jose Antonio has Public Medical Health Care coverage (IMSS) his critical state demanded special attention unavailable at the IMSS at this point.

As of January 12th the accumulated hospital expenses were $1.5 million pesos ($70,000 USD), an expensive bill hard to pay specifically since we’ve had to put our lives on hold to attend this medical emergency. Which is where you can help us. Anything you’re able to donate for the cause will go to his hospital bill and continuous treatments.

The road to recovery is still long and uncertain since he is still considered in critical condition, but we’re hopeful since the doctor’s reports are of continuous improvement and on Tuesday January 17 he was transferred intermediate care, finally!

Qué hacer cuando recibes una llamada de tu hermana diciendo “papá está grave, necesito una ambulancia para llevarlo al hospital”!!!

La familia Vázquez Retana inmediatamente se aseguró de que su padre tuviera la mejor atención posible.

El 25 de Diciembre José Antonio Vázquez Medina (73 años), esposo de Lupita Retana, padre de Liliana, Diana y Juan Antonio, abuelo de Liam, Sophia y Lucca, fue admitido al hospital con dificultad para respirar, dolor agudo abdominal, vómito, fiebre y debilidad extrema. El 30 de Diciembre fue necesario hacerle una cirugía mayor para remover la vesícula y drenar un absceso en el hígado y por ende fue admitido al área de cuidados intensivos, donde ha estado internado desde entonces.

Al enterarse de la situación Liliana, Toño y sus familias supieron que tenían que estar presentes para ayudar a su hermana Diana y estar junto a sus padres ya mayores.

Una ves en cuidados intensivos (UCI) y debido a su historial diabético y previo infarto ha necesitado 7 hemodiálisis para filtrar la sangre de la infección y aligerar la carga a los riñones. El segundo día en UCI sus pulmones empezaron a fallar y hubo necesidad de que se le entubara, y por consecuencia se le tuvo que empezar a dar alimento parenteral ( intravenoso) el cual ha sido necesario hasta el momento. Su progreso ha sido monitoreado por medio de tomografías y estudios de sangre. El hígado sigue mostrando inflamación y tiene poco de fluido en la cavidad torácica. Aunque los leucocitos bajaron de 23,000 varian entre 14,000-18,000. Los doctores prefieren basarse en los marcadores de inflamación (CRP, CPT) que están bajando continuamente.

Estas semanas han sido demasiado estresantes y agotadoras para toda la familia que ha estado haciendo guardia en el hospital y hablando con los doctores; pero especialmente cuando empezaron a llegar las llamadas de cobranza del hospital. Aunque José Antonio tiene seguro del IMSS, su estado crítico demandaba atención especial que no está disponible en el IMSS.

A partir del 12 de Enero la cuenta estaba en un total de $1.5 millones de pesos (alrededor de $70,000 dólares americanos) una cuenta muy alta y difícil de pagar especialmente ya que todos hemos tenido que poner nuestras vidas en pausa para acudir a esta emergencia médica. Aquí es donde necesitamos de su ayuda. Todas las donaciones serán destinadas única y exclusivamente a el pago de la cuenta de hospital y todos los tratamientos que se requieran.

El camino hacia la recuperación aún es largo e incierto ya que aún se le considera en estado crítico, pero seguimos teniendo esperanza ya que los informes médicos son de mejora continua y el Martes 17 de Enero se le transfirió a terapia intermedia.
