The worst monsoon of this century, suitably dubbed “a monsoon on steroids,” has left one-third of Pakistan underwater. The southern provinces of Sindh, Baluchistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and parts of Southern Punjab have received more than five times the average annual rainfall since mid-June 2022. As a result, more than 1,100 people have been killed, and 33 million have been displaced. According to Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority, the floodwaters have destroyed or damaged more than 1.2 million houses, 5,000 kilometers of roadways, 240 bridges, and inundated tens of thousands of square kilometers with water.
In southeastern Sindh province, which produces half of the country’s food, 90 percent of crops have been destroyed. Also, an elongated lake in Sindh has formed tens of kilometers wide, and more water will continue to pour into it.
More than 75 percent of Baluchistan, nearly half of Pakistan’s territory, is wholly or partially submerged in water.
Early estimates suggest the floods have caused $10B in damages to Pakistan.
This flooding will take months to drain, and more heavy rain is forecast for mid-September.
Nearly 900 health facilities across the country have been damaged, of which 180 are destroyed. As a result, millions have been left without access to health care and medical treatment. Currently, the injured that can be reached are being treated, but many more remain.
Of the 650,000 pregnant women directly affected in flood-hit areas, 73,000 will deliver their babies this month. The sheer scale of destruction those children will be born into is unimaginable.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), vector-borne diseases, including malaria and dengue fever, spread rapidly as mosquitoes breed in these conditions. For example, as of September 6, more than 134,000 cases of diarrhea and 44,000 cases of malaria were reported in Sindh province.
The threat to Pakistan’s people is unprecedented and unambiguous. Therefore, the Sindhi Association of North America calls for donations to help meet the needs of those suffering in Pakistan.
