Hi, my name is Amanda and I am starting this go fund me account on behalf of my friend and co-worker, Cristy Hutto. Cristy's middle child, Leo (Khoury), was diagnosed with ‘Budd-Chiari' (BUD-KEY-R-E) when she was in high school. Essentially Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) is a condition where the veins in the liver become clotted, so that very little or no blood gets through. The doctors placed a stent known as a TIPS (transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt), which would allow the blood a way to bypass the clots and relieve the back pressure. The procedure worked well for Leo until around the beginning of last year when the stent began to clot off repeatedly. The doctors then placed a DIPS (direct intrahepatic portocaval shunt) allowing the TIPS to clot off completely. This was just a stop-gap measure while Leo was placed on the liver transplant list. Leo received a liver in November 2022. While the initial transplant did well, Leo suffered many complications in the following months and passed away peacefully on February 4th, 2023. As you can imagine, Cristy rarely left their side and missed much work. Now, Cristy and her family are facing upcoming funeral expenses as well as medical costs.
