Cristina's Journey Through Loss and Healing

Some stories arrive quietly and still leave the heart shattered.

Cristina is a beloved member of our campus community. In her mid-seventies, she continues to show up with grace, resilience, and a kind of quiet dignity that’s hard to put into words but easy to feel. Last fall, she underwent a double knee replacement and spent several months recovering. During that time, one of her daughters moved from California to Colorado to care for her sharing meals, laughter, and everyday moments they couldn’t have known would be among their last.

This March, Cristina’s daughter began having sharp pain in her side. The diagnosis came suddenly and cruelly: stage four cancer. It progressed rapidly. Last week, Cristina’s daughter passed away.

Now Cristina is grieving her child while facing overwhelming medical bills, funeral costs, and the ongoing weight of basic living expenses. Retirement already a stretch is slipping further out of reach. The heartbreak alone is enough to carry. But she’s carrying so much more.

Algunas historias llegan en silencio… y aún así nos rompen el corazón.

Cristina es una mujer muy querida en nuestra comunidad universitaria. A sus setenta y tantos años, sigue trabajando con una fortaleza y una dignidad tranquila que se siente más allá de las palabras. El otoño pasado, se sometió a una cirugía de reemplazo doble de rodilla y pasó varios meses en recuperación. Durante ese tiempo, una de sus hijas se mudó de California a Colorado para cuidarla—compartieron comidas, risas y momentos cotidianos que no sabían serían los últimos.

En marzo, su hija comenzó a sentir un dolor fuerte en el costado. El diagnóstico fue devastador: cáncer en etapa cuatro. La enfermedad avanzó rápidamente. La semana pasada, su hija falleció.

Ahora, Cristina enfrenta un duelo inmenso mientras carga con facturas médicas, gastos funerarios, y las necesidades básicas del día a día. La jubilación—que ya era difícil—ahora parece aún más lejana. El dolor de perder a un hijo ya es demasiado… y sin embargo, ella sigue enfrentando tanto más.
