This is an urgent call to our extended community on behalf of our beloved sister Jamila Raegan and her son Bashir Oliver, who are in crisis and need immediate and sustained support.

As many of you know, Jamila has been caring for her son Bashir Oliver, lovingly known as "Babi," since he aged out of school at 22. Now 24, Bashir is mostly nonverbal and navigating multiple disabilities, including autism and epilepsy. Bashir is a loving, creative, adventurous young person with every right to a decent standard of life—but our systems have failed him and Jamila in every way.

To ensure his physical safety, Bashir needs two well-trained caregivers around-the-clock—at a cost of $31,200 per month. Additional basic expenses, from rent, utilities, and food to specialized medical transport services, bring their total expenses to $38,050 *per month*.

We are are asking our extended community to commit to one year of sustained care. We invite supporters to make a monthly pledge (select "monthly" when you get to the donation page) to help Jamila and Bashir get stabilized. If we spread the word, it could look like:

This support will allow Jamila to work toward her long-term vision: AMADA Soft Haus, a care facility designed for Bashir and other adults like him that will be sustained by institutional and philanthropic resources.

How Did This Happen?

Like so many families across America, Jamila and Bashir are contending with the sudden disappearance of support services when children with intellectual and physical disabilities become adults. This transition, known as "the cliff," has left Jamila in extreme financial duress; She and Bashir receive virtually no financial or care support from his father. Establishing adequate care is an essential safeguard against state violence for a non-verbal yet adventurous, 6'2 young Black man who likes to wander and occasionally run off.

Previous attempts at utilizing state care have led to disastrous consequences, including abuse. In February 20, 2026, Bashir was found alone at the Philadelphia International Airport, over six miles from his home, with two black eyes and multiple cuts and bruises. It was the final straw in a series of traumatic incidents. Despite the absence of any care support, Jamila brought Bashir home to keep him safe. She has taken an extended leave of absence from work to care for him singlehandedly, which means no income.

Practicing the Values of the Future We Want

We believe this is an opportunity for our extended community to practice the values of the world we want, one in which people participate in community care for our most vulnerable siblings as we build toward more sustainable solutions. In Jamila's words:

My hope is to create a safe, supportive life for Bashir that can serve as a model for others facing similar challenges. While our greatest obstacles are financial, we are also navigating a system that too often limits and endangers families like mine. We need financial support, legal advice, and your prayers.
