Cricket Ground Marathon (06.03.2021)
2020. A year where individuals and businesses alike have all suffered at the hands of Covid-19. At Altofts Cricket Club our superb committee have managed to ensure we weather the storm through the loss of income.
As most will know however, we suffered an even greater loss to finish the year, which has left our volunteers the almost insurmountable task of filling roles which has stretched our resources to the limit.
Clive Jackson was more than just a coach and a groundsman. Clive was relentless for Altofts Sports Club. Fundraiser, sponsorship organiser, accomodation provider, umpire, scorer..... to reel off just a few of the jobs that often went unnoticed.
There are many upgrades that we need at the Clive Jackson Cricket Ground to bring our facilities up to date. Whilst our committee are trying to plug the gaps that have been left, our club members have been looking at ways to try and raise the funds to not only fulfil Clive's duties, but to strengthen his legacy.
Personally I have been considering doing a Marathon with my fundraising being based around the Sports Club. With most races on hold, postponed or cancelled, it dawned on me that where better to complete the 26.2 miles, than around the ground itself!!!!!
Looking into this I will admit I was losing faith in the idea.... Until I received a little sign from someone, somewhere......
We recently compiled a "legends" feature, and in doing so we learned that CJ's top score for Altofts was 107.
Having done my maths for the Marathon, the total number of laps I will need to complete is...... You guessed it! 107!
At a time when pretty much everything is a struggle, anything that we can do individually for our sporting hub of our community is invaluable. And if anyone is able to help and support us at this challenging time, please feel free to donate what you can.
A marathon sounds tough (especially on 4 inch of grass!) But really any donations made are to help continue the legacy of a 40+ year marathon that one man ran for the love of his club.
Thank you in advance to anyone and everyone who has found a few quid spare to keep Altofts CC running their own race.
Dave
