My name is Cynthia Wiley and I am the owner of Creme Brulee LA, the first and only French bakery in Inglewood, California.
As a homeowner in South Central (near Inglewood) since 2009, I grew frustrated having to drive at least 5 miles to other, affluent, neighborhoods to bring my daughter to enjoy worldly treats that we all like!
Since 2018, I’ve wanted to open a brick-and-mortar location here in the “hood” where I live. Something different in the neighborhood, to complement what’s already here.
In September 2022, I finally found a location. The owner just wanted to sell, but after some negotiations (and some samples of my quiche and madeleines!) he agreed to lease his place for one year. The rental agreement was signed in October, and in November I had my Grand Opening.
My first four months were slow, barely scraping by to pay the $3,000 monthly rent and $800-$1,000 utilities, often needing to tap into my savings. But thanks to a shy but increasing notoriety, the business has started to pick up since March/April 2023. Now I’ve been open for 6 months and blessed with a loyal, returning clientele, apparently pleased with a little taste of Paris in Inglewood.
Unfortunately, I knew from the beginning that this could only last a year. Renewing the rental lease was never going to be an option, as the owner is determined to sell. We’ve agreed on a sale price of $140,000 which I would need to meet by October of this year.
I would love to become a permanent fixture in the community, but if I can’t raise $140,000 by that time, Creme Brulee will need to move out and find another location.
I have “sweat equity,” but also need “cash equity.” Therefore, I am asking for your contribution.
