In January, mom was leaving the movie theater with our dad when she suddenly noticed her left leg wasn’t responding to her brain’s commands. A few weeks later she was diagnosed with lung cancer that had spread to her brain. The tumor caused sudden and severe damage to her motor skills, leaving her hemiplegic—unable to move the entire left side of her body. If you’ve ever met our mom, you know she’s one of the most independent women you’ll ever come across. She now relies on a wheelchair and has lost much of the independence.
We've been fighting this battle for over six months now. After five long months in and out of hospitals and rehab centers, mom has finally been home for the past month. We're doing our best to create a new rhythm that feels like some version of normal life again.
Last night, we went out to dinner—for the first time in six months. We sat by the lake, and it brought Mom so much joy. We used a nonprofit transportation service that’s technically only meant for medical appointments (we had to lie a bit to make it happen).
This morning, we woke up and started looking for wheelchair-accessible vehicles—like a Fiat Doblo or similar minivan—so we can give her more of those moments. The nonprofits and public services that provide transportation for people with disabilities only allow rides to medical appointments.
We realized that if we had our own adapted vehicle, we could take Mom anywhere, anytime—no questions asked. To the lake. To a park. To visit friends. Even just out for a drive.
That’s why we’re asking for your help.
We’re raising funds to buy a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, so we can give our mom the freedom to leave the house and feel like herself again. Whether it’s $10 or $100, every contribution brings us closer to that goal.
If you can’t donate, please consider sharing this campaign. It would mean the world to us.
Thank you for walking alongside us during this journey. Your support and love are everything.
