Creative Ukraine

Creative Society (through its charity New Deal of the Mind) is launching Creative Ukraine on 24 February 2023.

We are aiming to raise initial funding of £20,000 to kick start the project.

Creative Ukraine is an international project to use art and culture to provoke action and debate on the ongoing struggle for freedom at the heart of Europe. Led by two prominent Ukrainian women temporarily based in the UK, Creative Ukraine will provide a template for events across the country and beyond. 

The Creative Ukraine platform will enable local people who wish to support the people of Ukraine to stage a series of festivals celebrating the diverse and vibrant culture of the country. The events will build on the strong bond between the people of Ukraine and their supporters around the world. 

Creative Ukraine: A Platform for the Future 

Aims

1. To use ART & CULTURE to provoke ACTION & DEBATE. We aim to initiate a global conversation on the war in Ukraine, to consider what the future might hold and to highlight both internal Ukrainian and global trends with which the new world must build its future.

2. To demonstrate the reality of modern Ukraine through the prism of talented Ukrainians creating an entirely new history, culture, and freedom. This powerful synergy in discussion and creativity will allow participants to engage audiences in a journey where they can question and reflect, transforming personal experiences into universal ones and vice versa. 

3. To provide Ukrainians abroad with a constructive and direct platform and framework for playing a vibrant role in maintaining support for their country whilst this conflict continues and taking part in debates on the shape and nature of the new Ukraine that will emerge when this war is over. 

4. To enable cooperation between Ukrainians abroad with local people and cultural organisations to increase mutual understanding and further good relationships. 

The Creative Ukraine platform will provide the provocation to (re)imagine a new Ukraine and its part in a post-war new world order and comprehensively assess the impact of events taking place in Ukraine on the whole world.

Empathising with ordinary people’s response to the war and marvelling at the resilience, resourcefulness and resolve of Ukrainians, the western world has got to know Ukraine itself - its culture, values, national character, traditions, history, national consciousness and Ukrainian identity. And most importantly, the world is getting to know the amazing Ukrainian people, changing the idea of what civil society looks like in a new and vibrant democracy. 

Who are all these people who fearlessly fight for their motherland and future at the battlefront and on the home front? 

Who were these people before the war, and how do they see their future?

For which vision of Ukraine are they ready to sacrifice their lives? 

And why did the war in Ukraine become a factor in the unprecedented consolidation of much of the world community, along with the development of the worst crisis in decades, affecting many spheres? 

Many governments and countries, along with citizens, feel their world is rapidly changing and wonder what Ukraine's role in this process is. Creative Ukraine provides a platform to ask these questions frankly and a space to debate our answers to them. 

The role of Ukrainians abroad is central to the continued projection of the story of Ukraine. This role, in the much more challenging phase of the conflict that now begins as the initial burst of global interest and support fades is more important than ever. The diaspora and the refugee communities can play (and, in many cases, have been playing) vital roles in maintaining support up to now. There are many people from the creative industries in these populations but there are also many others with other kinds of skill sets that can be mobilised. Many refugees are facing economic challenges or have had to earn a living doing other than creative kinds of work but they still have much to contribute.

Creative Ukraine provides a framework through which Ukrainians abroad, in partnership with local people, can organise and contribute to action in support of Ukraine through culture, art, action and debate.

Maria Proshkovska, Director, ART&CULTURE

Maria is a Ukrainian contemporary artist and art manager temporarily based in the UK. In Ukraine, she combined art practice with the development of independent art space Lab24. As an artist Maria is a laureate of the VOGUE art prize and special prize of MUHі 2017. Maria was a participant of the American Arts Incubator in Ukraine 2018 program as a team-leader. Her art practice aims to provoke public discussion on socially critical topics such as gender studies and collective trauma. Works were presented in personal and group exhibitions at MAMbo (Bologna, Italy), Mitchell Art Gallery (MacEwan University, Edmonton, Canada), White Box Gallery (New York, USA), Dreamers and Artisans. House for Social Innovation (Warsaw, Poland), Conceptica Gallery (Lisbon, Portugal), Kranj International Art Festival (Kranj, Slovenia), National Literature Museum (Tbilisi, Georgia), FUTURA (Prague, Czech Republic), Shcherbenko Art Centre (Kyiv, Ukraine), Kyiv Art Fair, America House Kyiv, IZOLYATSIA (Kyiv, Ukraine) and many others. Anna Makhlay, Director, ACTION&DEBATE

Anna is a specialist in strategic planning, effective networking and project management. Under her leadership, Strategic Consultants Group has developed and implemented a large number of socio-political and communication campaigns, social research in Ukraine and abroad. Anna has experience in working with the legislative and executive authorities of Ukraine and in establishing effective communications and cooperation between state and public structures. She graduated from the Faculty of Law, National Taras Shevchenko University and has experience in legal expertise of the legislative process in Ukraine. Designing social problems and formulating a reform strategy is one of the competencies that Anna acquired while working in a committee of the Ukrainian Parliament. Anna was the organizer of round tables, public hearings and discussions, which contributed to the development of legislation in Ukraine. From 2004 to 2011, she was a personal assistant to the Leader of a political party, who was appointed Prime Minister of Ukraine. John Smith Trust Fellow 2010.

Благодійна організація Creative Society (та New Deal of the Mind) до 24 лютого 2023 року запускає проєкт Creative Ukraine.

Creative Ukraine - це міжнародний проєкт, спрямований через призму мистецтва та творчості ініціювати публічну дискусію про війну за свободу в серці Європи. Платформа надасть можливість проведення культурних заходів у будь-якій точці світу. Ініціатива належить двом талановитим українським жінками, які тимчасово проживають у Великобританії.

Наша ціль - зібрати для запуску проєкту початкове фінансування у розмірі 20 000 фунтів стерлінгів.

Проєкт дозволить залучити широку аудиторію, яка вже підтримує українців, а також тих, кому Україна та її суспільство залишаються малознайомими, і провести серію заходів, присвячених різноманітності та яскравості нашої культури. Івенти ґрунтуватимуться на принципі побудови міцного зв'язку між українцями та представниками місцевих громад.

Метою створення платформи Creative Ukraine є:

1. Ініціювати дискусію та надати простір для мистецтва та всіх видів творчості. Ми прагнемо провести глобальний діалог про причини війни в Україні, проаналізувати майбутні світові виклики та тенденції, з якими будуватиме своє майбутнє Україна та цивілізований світ.

2. Продемонструвати актуальність сучасної України через призму процесів, проєктів та знайомств із талановитими українцями, які є акторами новітньої історії, культури та свободи. Ця потужна синергія дискусії та творчості дозволить залучити аудиторію до подорожі, в якій учасники зможуть ставити питання та рефлексувати, трансформуючи особистий досвід в універсальний, і навпаки.

3. Надати українцям за кордоном конструктивну платформу і простір для активної участі та підтримки своєї країни під час війни. А також мати можливість обговорювати форми та характер післявоєнної України.

4. Сприяти співпраці українців за кордоном з місцевим населенням та культурними організаціями задля покращення взаєморозуміння та подальшої конструктивної колаборації.

Платформа Creative Ukraine має на меті спровокувати публічне обговорення та уявити нову Україну та її роль у післявоєнному світовому устрої, а також комплексно оцінити вплив подій на весь світ.

Світ вражений рішучістю, стійкістю та винахідливістію українців, одночасно пізнає й саму Україну - її культуру та цінності, традиції й історію, національний характер, свідомість та ідентичність. І найголовніше - світ знайомиться з дивовижним народом, який змінює уявлення про те, як виглядає громадянське суспільство в новій і динамічній демократії.

Хто всі ті люди, які безстрашно відстоюють Батьківщину на всіх фронтах?

Ким вони були до війни і яким бачать своє майбутнє?

За яку Україну вони готові жертвувати всім?

І чому війна в Україні стала фактором безпрецедентної консолідації значної частини світової спільноти поряд з наймасштабнішою кризою останніх десятиліть? Багато урядів країн разом з пересічними громадянами відчувають стрімкі зміни і ставлять питання про роль України в цьому процесі.

Роль українців за кордоном є центральною для подальшої проекції історії. Сьогодні йде гостра фаза війни, коли увага та глобальна підтримка є важливішою, ніж будь-коли. Діаспора та громади тимчасово переселених українців можуть відігравати (і, в багатьох випадках вже відіграють) життєво важливу роль у забезпеченні цієї підтримки. Серед цих груп населення є багато представників креативних індустрій, але є також багато інших людей з іншими навичками, яких можна залучити. Більшість дислокованих спеціалістів стикаються з фінансовими труднощами або змушені заробляти на життя низько кваліфікованою працею, але вони можуть зробити значний внесок у розвиток креативних індустрій.

Платформа Creative Ukraine має намір надати простір для об’єднання креативних та інтелектуальних українців всього світу навколо спільної мети – відбудови України майбутнього.

Марія Прошковська, директорка, CULTURE&ART

Марія - українська сучасна художниця та арт-менеджерка, яка тимчасово проживає у Лондоні. В Україні поєднувала художню практику з розвитком незалежного арт-простору Lab24. Марія є лауреаткою мистецької премії VOGUE та спеціальної премії МУХі 2017. Марія була учасницею програми Американського мистецького інкубатора в Україні 2018 року в якості team-leader. Її мистецька практика має на меті спровокувати суспільну дискусію на соціально критичні теми, такі як гендерні дослідження та колективна травма. Роботи були представлені на персональних та групових виставках у MAMbo (Болонья, Італія), Mitchell Art Gallery (MacEwan University, Едмонтон, Канада), White Box Gallery (Нью-Йорк, США), Dreamers and Artisans. Анна Махлай, директорка DEBATE

Анна - фахівець зі стратегічного планування, ефективного нетворкінгу та проектного менеджменту з України, тимчасово базується в Единбурзі. За її участі команда Strategic Consultants Group розробила та реалізувала велику кількість соціально-політичних та комунікаційних кампаній і соціальних досліджень. Анна має досвід роботи з органами законодавчої та виконавчої влади в Україні та налагодженням ефективної комунікації і співпраці між державними та громадськими структурами. Закінчила юридичний факультет Київського національного університету імені Тараса Шевченка та має досвід надання правової експертизи у законотворчому процесі в Україні. Конструювання суспільних проблем та формування стратегії реформ - одна з компетенцій, яку Анна набула під час роботи у Верховній Раді України. Анна приймала участь в організації круглих столів, громадських слухань та дискусій, які сприяли розвитку законодавства. З 2004 по 2011 рік була особистим помічником Голови партії Батьківщина та Прем'єр-міністра України.

Учасниця програми Фонду Джона Сміта у 2010 році та програми Womеn in Conflict 1325 у 2022 році.
