Precious Plastic Youth L.A.

Donation protected
Plastic pollution continues to be a major problem across the world with a wide-reaching impact on wildlife. In LA County alone, we produce 28 tons of solid waste annually, while only around 10% of this waste is recycled.

We're Lana Lim and Michael Miyajima, two high schoolers living in Los Angeles. We realized that many of our peers lacked the interest or motivation to alleviate environmental problems. This can be largely attributed to the lack of sustainability-focused classes in schools. Many youth surveys indicated they never or rarely hear about sustainability in the classroom.

With your support we can start  a free traveling mobile recycling workshop geared specifically for L.A. youth in L.A. schools. We believe in fun, engaging, hands on educational classes in the schools that promote sustainability and reduces plastic pollution.

With our free mobile workshop, students will be recycling their own plastic waste and gain the opportunity to turn it into new functional products such as bowls and vases, keychains,  earrings and many more. They will also learn about the plastic pollution problem and what they can do to help in a fun and kid friendly way.

Our free mobile workshop will be equipped with a set of simple plastic recycling machines modeled after the machines created by Dave Hakkens in his Precious Plastic Project( link ).
The machine can shred plastic waste into micro-sized pieces that can be easily melted and reshaped. The melted plastic can be shaped into bowls, cups, or used as filament for 3D printers. It can also fill small molds with plastic - essentially anything that can be molded can be created with the resultant component, such as combs, small toy animals, key chains, and earrings.

With our mobile workshop, students can both reduce the amount of plastic sent to landfills and gain experience in fighting against the pollution problem, along with gaining a better understanding of the process of recycling, and the necessity for sustainable prevention work.
