Help a Child Go to School Today

Imagine you are a child living in a rural village in a developing country. You dream of living in the future, helping your family and community. Maybe you are thinking about becoming a doctor, teacher, lawyer, or loving parent. You wish to make a positive difference in the world, but a significant obstacle stands in your way. Your family can not afford the cost of school.

Unlike education in some countries, even elementary school is not free in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and many other developing countries. Farmer families must pay for school tuition in addition to uniforms, books, and other fees. For these poor families, this is simply an impossible option. They must make the hard choice to pay for food for their children or send them to school.

The situation becomes more complex if there is no local school in the community. The parents often make the difficult decision to separate the family. The student goes to live near a school, with a relative living near a school, or the family makes a greater sacrifice by paying for boarding school. This can leave the rest of the family without regular meals.

When there is some money for school fees, young girls are often the last to be considered for inclusion in the education process. Instead, they face discrimination, early marriage, and violence.

Children without parents face a lifetime of servitude and are often denied access to basic education and opportunity. This is not fair or right.
