Creating Climbing Orthotics and Paying It Forward
Donation protected
Following a 2018 accident that led to partial paralysis in my hips, ankles, calves and feet, I am grateful that I can resume one of my biggest passions: rock climbing. As I've continued to progress as an adaptive climber, I have been able to continue lead climbing easy sport, and I have begun leading trad. I am also working toward Single Pitch Instructor certification. Despite all of those accomplishments, one thing has continually slowed my progress: my lack of plantar flexion.
Five years post accident, I am still unable to toe off of anything, making things like smearing and climbing slab especially difficult. I have wonderful leg braces, partially funded by the High Fives Foundation, that help with hiking and walking. However, those don't function quite as well for climbing. One day, I would like to tackle bigger walls, but I need adaptations to make that possible.
I have the chance to go to Chattanooga, Tennessee, for a week in November to work with Ronnie Dickson, an accomplished paraclimber and owner of Prosthetic & Orthotic Associates of Tennessee. Ronnie has graciously agreed to take on my case despite his shop's stacked schedule. My personal funds, however, are currently tied up with other adaptive-related travel.
I am asking for your help in raising funds for a trip, my stay, and costs associated with the creation of the orthotics. Donors of $25 or more will receive an enamel climbing-hold pin, designed by my graphic-designer wife. All donors will receive a report on the trip following my return. Any funds raised beyond the amount I am quoting here will be donated to other adaptive climbers to assist with travel expenses. I am actively having those conversations on how to best benefit other climbers, and I will report back once that's settled. In addition, you will be contributing to the general knowledge base of assisting people like me with similar injury presentation.
Any amount counts, and I am so grateful for the support that I have received from the adaptive community and our allies. Y'all make my heart burst often.
