Dear Friends and Community,
We’re reaching out to ask for your support for our beloved Kathy Callaway—a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who has held our family together through many challenges.
For those of you who are not familiar with the hardships Kathy has experienced over the past few years, we would like to ask you to take this time to read as we share her story of strength and resilience for an individual who has had to endure the difficult loss of her daughter and spouse and is now struggling with her own medical needs.
Tragically, Kathy and her better half of over 50 years, Lewis, and the family suffered an unexpected and heartbreaking loss of Kathy and Lewis’s only daughter, Samantha—a beloved daughter, sister, mother, and grandmother.
After the loss of their daughter, Kathy and Lewis made the hard decision of leaving their beloved home state of Alabama, where they were surrounded by all of their loved ones and friends, to move to Delaware in order to be a better support system for their grandchildren and family.
Unfortunately, a few years after the loss of Samantha, Kathy had to also say goodbye to the love of her life, Lewis, after battling a terminal condition where she stood by his side through it all.
As anyone can imagine, these losses have taken a toll emotionally, physically, and financially, and now is our time to be present for Kathy in her time of need.
Since the loss of her spouse, Kathy has been fighting ongoing health issues. She has been managing chronic illnesses that have required procedures and courses of ongoing treatment. Since these initial procedures, she has had to manage ongoing complications and side effects, leaving her to struggle with her strength, mobility, and independence at home.
On December 22, 2025, Kathy went in for what was expected to be a routine cardiac catheterization. During recovery, she had difficulty waking, and after further testing, it was determined she had suffered a stroke affecting her speech, mobility, and peripheral vision.
After a lengthy hospitalization, Kathy pushed through rehab and is now back home to finish her recovery, but she needs a few essential changes to her living space to stay safe, comfortable, and independent. At this time, she is gaining her strength back day by day, but with being in the hospital and rehab, she has lost a notable amount of weight and muscle mass, which has made mobility and strength more challenging during her recovery.
On the first day home from rehab, we noticed changes needed to be made in order to keep Kathy safe as she experienced a loss of balance. Thankfully, she was not injured, and ultimately, we learned to take our time while working on gaining strength.
With all of this being said, our goal is to raise $7,500 to help install a walk-in accessible shower so Kathy can bathe safely and independently. If funds allow, the remaining amount will go toward a mini heating/cooling split unit for her home. The trailer she lives in has poor insulation, and maintaining a stable temperature is important for her overall health. After a few difficult winters, we’re hoping to make these improvements to support her long-term well-being and reduce the strain of extreme electric costs related to poor heating and air systems.
Kathy’s son has construction experience, and her grandchildren are also ready to help, so our family will be handling most of the renovation work to keep costs as low as possible.
In addition to the financial support, we would be incredibly grateful if any local plumbers would be willing to donate time, offer a reduced rate, or provide a trusted recommendation to help with the shower plumbing. If you can help, please reach out through this GoFundMe.
Kathy has always been the heart of our family, and now we want to make sure she can live with dignity, comfort, and safety as she continues recovering. Any contribution—no matter the size—means the world to us and helps create a safer home for Kathy.
Thank you for your kindness and support. We truly appreciate everyone’s help as we try to remain vigilant and optimistic for Kathy’s recovery and healing.
