Help build an art centre in a conflict zone.

I am seeking support to enable me to complete an art center in Borno State, Nigeria.

My name is Fati Abubakar, (www.fatiabubakar.com), a documentary photographer from Nigeria. I have spent the past six years on a personal project to showcase my hometown of Borno State at the time of a conflict. The project ''Bits of Borno'' on social media has gained critical acclaim and has been published in media outlets including the New York Times, BBC, Reuters, CNN, Voice of America, Newsweek Europe.

I have a special interest in creating counter-narratives for underrepresented communities and in my short career have seen the impact of visual storytelling hence there is a need to train young people to continue in creating art. "Art after conflict creates a unique opportunity to express the pain of loss and war, share the burden and potentially begin to heal from it''

In light of this, I have registered an Arts Foundation aimed at education in the area of digital literacy; photography, videography, audio documentaries, and social media in North-Eastern Nigeria. With this project www.kanemcreative.com, I have begun a new lifelong impactful initiative.

I kickstarted this initiative with monetary support from the Africa Transitional Justice Legacy Fund and we recently hosted a media workshop for some youths in North-Eastern Nigeria.
Having worked in the field of photography in the last few years documenting the impact of the Boko Haram insurgency in my state, Borno amongst other important stories in Nigeria, it became imperative that I take on this new initiative.

This project is geared towards building a digitally literate future for people in the North East, Nigeria. We also hope to increase the journalistic and artistic capacities of youths in the region as they navigate life in a region hard hit by insurgency.

For this reason, we are seeking donations to refurbish a creative space for workshops called Kanem Creative Center. Our current needs are: furniture, exhibition lighting, generator, solar panels, restoration of the building (classroom, editing studio, gallery, library, office space), and many other expenses geared towards an ultra modern afrocentric art space.

If this initiative has interested you in any way, then any contribution would be hugely appreciated to help fund the establishment of the center.
