Hi, my name is Jamie Smail. I’m the one with the beard. My eldest son Callum is beside me.

Callum died on the 13th of April 2026 in a farming accident near Broken Hill, New South Wales.

He was 26 years old, just two weeks engaged to the love of his life Brittany, and preparing for the next chapter of their lives together — working around Australia, more dogs, a lot more laughs, good times, and eventually marriage.

Our hearts are broken. Like many families who have experienced loss in rural communities, we are now learning how to live with something no parent or sibling ever expects.

Callum loved the agricultural industry. He loved the people in it, the places it took him, and the life it gave him. He spent three of the best years of his life at Longerenong College, where he formed lifelong friendships and experiences that helped shape the man he became.

In Callum’s memory, our family hopes to establish the Callum Smail Memorial Scholarship at Longerenong College. We want to build something positive and ongoing in his name — a legacy that reflects the qualities that mattered deeply to him: mateship, kindness, leadership, safety awareness, and looking out for others.

We are currently in discussions with the college and hope to begin awarding scholarships from 2027 onwards, recognising students who embody those values and who will go on to contribute positively to the agricultural community.

While nothing can change what has happened to our family, we hope this scholarship may, over time, help support young people entering the agricultural industry and honour not only Callum, but also the many families and communities who have experienced loss through farming accidents.
