Our son's name is Emmett. He is a funny, joy-filled boy who also has multiple disabilities, including Cerebral Palsy, which has him unable to walk, sit, or stand independently at 5 years old.
For a long time, our family was able to accommodate all his needs in our house. But as this wonderful boy grows, it is becoming increasingly more difficult and less safe for us to carry him up the stairs to the bedrooms and the only full bathrooms in the house. So, we moved his bedroom downstairs to the office. That also worked for a while, but then we added more mobility devices, more medical equipment, and now the office that serves as his room is bursting at the seams, making it hard to access all his equipment. He currently gets his personal hygiene needs met in the kitchen sink; that is also a short-term solution.
We now are facing a need to create a long-term solution to meet Emmett's needs that will afford him the most dignity and independence, no matter how his skills develop, as he grows.
We are hoping to build him a wheelchair accessible bedroom and bathroom on the first floor of our home.
