On Friday night, my sister Olivia was hit by a car while riding her moped home from work in downtown Honolulu. The accident has left her with painful injuries, hefty unexpected medical bills, and the loss of her only form of transportation. While we are incredibly grateful that she is alive and on the road to recovery, the financial burden is overwhelming. Between ER visits, surgery, upcoming treatments, and the need for a new moped (or possibly a car for safer transportation), the costs are quickly adding up.

Typically in accidents, the other driver’s insurance covers vehicle damage & medical bills. But because Hawaii is a “no-fault” state, this means the driver who hit Olivia is not liable for her medical bills or replacing her moped after the accident, regardless of the fact that she was at fault. The other driver involved walked away from the accident without so much as a citation.
