Crazy Poor Asians
Hi, my name is Tomo, and I’m raising funds for my short film, Crazy Poor Asians.
This project is based on my personal experiences as a newcomer to Toronto while trying to build a career as a photographer and filmmaker. Almost everything you will see on screen is based on true events.
The Story: Why "Poor"
The film follows TOSHI, 26 years old, on a working holiday visa, a soft-spoken Japanese photographer.
From the moment he arrives, he tries to build a portfolio, find work, expand his network, and survive financially in one of the world’s most expensive cities.
When he discovers a surprisingly affordable room in a downtown apartment, only for $650 per month, all-inclusive.
There is only one thing. The apartment is shared with the building’s eccentric property manager.
What begins as a minor inconvenience gradually develops into a bizarre situation that TOSHI cannot seem to escape.
Unable to afford a better apartment, terrified of losing professional opportunities, and reluctant to create conflict, TOSHI chooses to endure the increasingly uncomfortable circumstances rather than confront them directly.
As winter deepens and the pressure builds, the apartment slowly transforms into a strange emotional pit where frustration, loneliness, cultural misunderstandings, and financial insecurity collide.
The story explores:
- Immigrant survival
- Culture shock
- Financial insecurity
- Masculinity and vulnerability
- Impossible roommate relationships
My goal is to portray these experiences as honestly as possible while allowing audiences to laugh at the absurdity of real life, and perhaps learn some lessons from his mistakes.

Why I Want To Make This Film
I moved to Toronto with my camera in 2018 while trying to establish myself in a new country.
Looking back, many of the challenges I experienced were not simply about difficult people.
They were often the result of cultural misunderstandings, financial pressure, loneliness, insecurity, and poor communication. At the time, many of these situations felt very frustrating and frightening.
Now, many of them feel absurdly funny.
Crazy Poor Asians is my attempt to turn those memories into something entertaining, honest, and perhaps educational.
This film is not about portraying anyone as purely good or bad. Instead, it explores how ordinary people can create extraordinary chaos.
I hope the film resonates with:
- People who have lived overseas
- Newcomers struggling financially
- Creatives trying to survive in expensive cities
- Anyone who has dealt with difficult roommates
- People who enjoy awkward, grounded human comedy
These experiences became some of my most meaningful memories in Canada.
I would love to share them with audiences, friends, family, and especially my grandmothers in Japan while they are still around.

Crazy Poor Asians

Style & Artistic Vision - Dry Comedic Winter
Visually, the film will blend documentary realism with cinematic storytelling. The goal is to make audiences feel as though they are living inside TOSHI’s world—cramped apartments, harsh Toronto winters, endless exhaustion, financial pressure and loneliness.
The film will use natural lighting, handheld camerawork, grounded performances, and fast-paced deadpan editing.
As TOSHI’s stress, discomfort, and frustration grow, the visual style will gradually become more tense and exaggerated, reflecting how overwhelming ordinary situations can feel when someone is isolated and financially trapped: Hence, "crazy."

Future Prospects
Over the years, I have been fortunate to build friendships with many talented Toronto-based creatives. This project is an opportunity to bring those people together and create something personal, funny, and emotionally honest.
The completed film will be submitted to Canadian, Japanese, and international film festivals, including events such as:
- Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival
- TIFF
- Tokyo Independent Film Festival
Regardless of festival results, I fully intend to release the film online and organize screenings so supporters and collaborators can experience the finished project together.
Long-term, I would love to expand Crazy Poor Asians into a larger anthology project involving multiple Asian filmmakers and creatives inspired by real immigrant and newcomer experiences.
- Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival
- TIFF
- Tokyo Independent Film Festival

Risks and Challenges
Since the film is set in Toronto during winter, capturing the city’s distinctive cold and snowy atmosphere is essential to the story. However, I am currently based in New Zealand, meaning much of the pre-production process must be conducted remotely.
This includes casting, rehearsals, production planning, wardrobe preparation, equipment research, and location scouting. Working across countries and time zones presents communication and scheduling challenges, requiring close collaboration with Toronto-based cast and crew throughout development.
I intend to arrive in Toronto in December and dedicate at least seven days to final rehearsals, in-person location scouting, production meetings, and equipment testing before filming begins. Principal photography is planned over five shoot days to accommodate weather, scheduling changes, or unforeseen production challenges.
As an independent filmmaker, I understand the importance of preparation, flexibility, and clear communication. By combining thorough remote planning with dedicated on-the-ground preparation, I am confident the project can be completed successfully while maintaining both creative quality and production efficiency.
There is also a creative risk in telling a story involving cultural differences without reinforcing stereotypes. My approach is to portray the events as truthfully as possible rather than exaggerating cultures or groups for comedy. Many of the conflicts ultimately come from loneliness, financial pressure, poor communication, assumptions, and personal insecurities rather than someone's ethnicity or culture. I am also working with a diverse Toronto-based team who can provide different perspectives throughout the process.
The film itself is partly about how our assumptions about other people can become misleading. I hope that by approaching these characters with honesty and empathy—even when their behaviour is absurd—the audience can laugh at what happened without reducing anyone to a stereotype.
