11 years ago, my husband Craig Willoughby was diagnosed with oligoastrocytoma, a rare form of brain cancer. Very quickly after the diagnosis, he underwent surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. With those treatments, he was able to beat brain cancer and had been in remission since. We have been incredibly fortunate for beating it the first go around and getting to spend the last decade in remission. Heartbreakingly, it was discovered that his brain cancer has returned. At this time of writing this, the treatment plan is for Craig to undergo another surgery, almost exactly 11 years to the day. It is still unknown what the future holds with this round as far as any treatments beyond surgery could go and has yet to be determined. Because of surgery alone, Craig will need to be off of work for an extended amount of time. Our family will take on a really hard financial hit because of this. Unfortunately, just in time for the holiday season coming right around the corner.

Craig and I share three wonderful kids together, ages 12, 8 and 2. We are devastated to have to go through this again and are undoubtedly heartbroken that our children will have to witness their daddy endure this. Remission had never come without fear and worries. We had prayed that our children would never have to carry those same feelings that we have carried and tried to suppress. We are still trying to protect them from those fears and worries. We are trying to keep their lives as normal as possible, just as we have chosen to do over the years for ourselves after beating it the first time. I have faith that he will beat it again. This is just something we have to go through. For now, we are going to try to keep the bills paid and our family taken care of through the help of our supporters so that we can focus on fighting this and just getting through the next few months of recovery. I am hoping that I can somewhat ease Craig’s mind in knowing that we will have some help to get through this and that he, as a provider, can just focus on getting better and hopefully have a few less worries. He truly does so much for us as a family.
