Some of you will know all about this story. Some of you won't, but please, either way, read on. Please read all of this, it is important.
23rd November 2024; my best mate Craig's life changed forever. He was assaulted on a works night out. I remember getting the call from another friend the following day. It was frightening and heart breaking.
This moment of madness has had a massive impact on Craig, his quality of life and sadly, his finances (see below) - hence my posting this:
I want to use a bit of meaningless physical activity on my part to raise a bit of meaningful brass for Craig to help him, Mel and the boys enjoy Christmas a little more.
I will be riding 135 miles over two days through the Lincolnshire Wolds.
I ask you kindly, please contribute if you can, to help Craig out a little bit more this Christmas.
Remember, one punch can kill. A moment of madness, a lack of control, drunken aggression leaves severe consequences.
I will share Mel's (Craig's partner) Facebook post as she details the full story and her feelings:
"Today marks 1 year since my fiancé Craig Gallant was the victim of a horrendous unprovoked assault!! At 3:30am I received a call that would change mine and Craig’s life forever! He had been the victim of an assault whilst on a Xmas works night out. He had been rushed to LGI and was in a medical induced coma. Seeing him laid on a hospital bed in resus his clothes partially cut, hooked up to every machine available is an image that will remain with me forever. He was transferred to ICU at LGI and there the rollercoaster began. Craig had suffered a traumatic brain injury, he had 2 fractures to his skull, bleeding and bruising to his brain and brain damage. The days all mashed together as one, some would be positive with Craig showing small improvements, others were heartbreaking. After 4 days, we were told that the injuries Craig sustained were life threatening. The consultant brought mine and Craig’s family into a room and showed us the CT scans and the excessive damage caused to his brain. We were told that he was critical for the next 24hrs and potentially needed a craniotomy to help with the swelling of his brain. He was placed on strong medication which went directly to his brain which helped reduce the swelling. Gradually he showed more signs of improvement and the decision to reduce the sedation he was under was made. I always imagined it being like a Disney film where the princess wakes up and everything is perfect, in real life it is far from it. Days went by, I would sit next to his bedside and squeeze his hand three times our secret code for I love you. I would play music to him and talk to him constantly telling him to wake up, telling him to fight through it..slowly Craig woke up. On the 18th December Craig was discharged from hospital. This is where our second fight began. Craig still struggles with reading and writing, He suffers chronic daily headaches, Craig is now epileptic and has had a number of seizures due to the damage caused to his brain. He has a multitude of hospital workers, consultants, social workers, occupational therapists that attend weekly, the help and support we have received from them I will be forever thankful for.
We are still a year on, fighting for benefits we are lead to believe as honest hard working tax payers we are entitled to.… I shall say no more on that matter!!
Our lives have changed from one night out, one punch! The plans we had made for starting our own family, getting married stopped in the blink of an eye. Our whole lives have turned upside down. I would like to thank all the help and support both me and Craig have received from our friends and family, there are too many to name in this post! But we love every one of you!!
All I will ask is Please…as the festive period is fast approaching and the Xmas works parties start, PLEASE remember and please share this post
!!!ONE PUNCH CAN KILL!!!!"
Thank you xx
Merry Christmas.
