Uppsala University iGEM 2017 is a team consisting of 20 students from over the globe, all with a passion for advanced biology and its applications.

Uppsala University has been an active member of iGEM since 2009, with an impressive resume and legacy, winning a gold medal each year in the competition, as well as winning the prestigious awards “Best hardware 2016” and “Best European Biobrick 2013”.

Our project this year is to be the first to synthesise alpha-Crocin.

Alpha-Crocin as a compound has a wide range of medicinal and industrial applications. It is a powerful antioxidant, inhibits cancer, is a potential neuroprotective agent and could be used to treat obesity. The deep red color could also be used as a natural dye for both scientific and commercial purposes.
