PPEforHHS Hamilton: Protect our healthcare workers

As you’ve undoubtedly heard by now, there is a critical shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) across Canada, and the world. Like in many other healthcare communities, Hamilton healthcare workers have already tested positive for COVID-19 and that is something that we must try to prevent. PPE is absolutely essential to protect our frontline workers, to avoid understaffed emergency units, and to help reduce the spread to the rest of the community. In order to continue to care for the community and save lives, healthcare workers cannot be susceptible to contracting the virus via a lack of available or clean PPE.

We are a group of scientists in Hamilton, Ontario who have close contacts with access to this protective equipment. Our contacts have been able to purchase and ship essential medical masks to us so that we can donate them to the Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) organization. Thanks to internal fundraising, we were able to purchase 1200 medical masks. 500 have already been received in Hamilton, and the rest are on their way. After another round of fundraising, the generous donations of our close friends allowed another 960 N95 masks to be ordered, and they are about to be shipped. McMaster Children’s Hospital has agreed to accept the PPE and will allocate it where necessary, on behalf of HHS. We have decided to open up our fundraising efforts to the greater community because we are fortunate enough to have a reliable source of vital PPE.
