Kay Needs A Home

Donation protected
Kay is doing everything he can to put his life together, sadly, he was struck on his bike in a hit and run, and he could really use a bit of light and a helping hand.

Kay came to Columbus from New York with very little in his wallet.  He came to have a fresh start, with a new job and to make a new life here.   When he came he was hard pressed to find someplace to live, he ended up in a less than ideal situation in a very rough part of town 10 miles away from his new job.  That didn’t matter to him, he pulled himself up and got a bus pass to ride the bus an hour and a half to work and another hour and a half back home for each workday.   That was alright, he was going to save money to get a place closer to work, and he threw himself into that job with a work ethic that I find simply astounding.

Any work hours he could have he took them, he volunteered to work seven days a week at times, if there was a need to have him, he immediately stepped forward to take it.  When there was an opening for him to gain a promotion at his work he took it immediately, but there was one issue, he would have to work a shift that had him staying until after the last bus ran.  Many people would have admitted defeat, he didn’t have a car, he lived 10 miles away, he had no way home.

Not Kay, after thinking a little bit, he said he would get a bike and bike home every evening.  He wanted to move ahead in the company and was confident that biking was the answer, after all, it would only be until he saved up enough money to move closer.  It didn’t matter he would be riding an hour and a half at night, what mattered was he was getting ahead and with a new raise!   He got a bike, helmet, rechargeable lights and was set with his new position.  We were all worried about him biking home at night, or even just biking that distance, but he rode the route several times and assured us he could do it.  We all hoped for the best.

Unfortunately, things didn’t go the way anyone wanted.  On Monday 10/07 he got on his bike after working his new shift and began the ride home.  He got within a block of his house when he crossed a street and a driver struck him, the car didn’t even stop to see if he was okay, and he was left in the street in the middle of the night until the police could arrive.  One ER trip later and it was clear he broke his leg and life had given him another harsh turn.  He has no real sick time or paid time off and no health insurance yet, huge concerns.  His only worry the next day, though, was who was going to work his shift and trying to find a way to come in anyway.  That’s the sort of person Kay is.  An amazing one.

Kay needs help.  We desperately want to help him get an apartment closer to his job where he won’t be hobbling between two buses to get back and forth.  We want him in a better neighborhood with less risk of something bad happening to him.  We want to help him with medical bills.  And we can’t do it alone.  This is a man who is trying to put his life together and needs some human compassion right now.

We are trying to raise at least $2,500 to get him into a new apartment, cover his specialists visits and try to cover the time he has been forced to take off.  This is a story that has touched all of the people he works with, he’s family to us, and he deserves a hand to help him up when he’s been knocked down.  Can you help?  Can you give just a little?
