COVID19 Visor Fund

A bit about me...

Hi, I'm Theo , I'm 16, an aspiring engineer in the North East of England with a passion for F1. For the last two weeks I have been making medical visors for the amazingly dedicated NHS staff and carers in care homes.

I was initially asked to make reusable visors for her practice by my mum who is a local GP. At that point the practice hadn't been issued the full PPE required when seeing possible Covid-19 patients. As this was very succesful, I have gone on to make visors for care homes, the gastroenterology unit at the QE hospital, GP practices and the local district nursing team. I am happy to make visors for any essential workers who need them.

There is a huge need for visors, especially amongst care homes who look after the most vulnerable in our society and seem to have the least access to reliable PPE. This is obviously very topical at the moment. This issue is also very close to my heart as my gran, who is very frail, was admitted to a nursing home the week before lock-down. I have recently supplied her care home with much needed visors and I really hope this might reduce the risk of her, the other clients or her carers catching this horrible disease which is really mainly targeting our vulnerable, frail, elderly population.

What I'm Doing & How to Help

I have a basic 3D printer at home which I was given 4 years ago for Christmas. I am able to make 5 visors/day on this machine. Each visor costs £3 to make - so it's a very cost effective way of making reusable PPE - the visor can be sterilised, reused and isn't thrown away.

A batch of visors.

This week I've been featured in articles on my school websiteThe Times  and the Chronicle  to do with national PPE shortage. This is all entirely new for me but I think its so important to see if I can do my part, however small, to support all those putting themselves at risk for others in these frightening and uncertain times.

My lovely gran.

I am looking to raise money to buy the raw materials, such as filament spools which cost about £20 per kg and produce about 30 masks each, elastic strapping and acetate sheets . If there is additional money available, I would be keen to buy more 3D printers so I can significantly upscale production and get visors out in greater volume in a more timely manner.

Thank you for reading this and please contribute what you can to this cause. It does make a difference and boosts the morale of the carers who need this equipment immensely. They need to be supported and deserve all the protection they can get in these challenging times to stay healthy and continue to care for the most vulnerable people in society.
