COVID Support for Indigenous Peoples of Bolivia

Bolivia is now in a state of emergency because of the current COVID-19 pandemic. Without easy access to healthcare facilities, lack of personal protective equipment and food, and a worsening economic recession, indigenous communities exposed to the virus are suffering enormously. The country lacks sufficient resources and infrastructure to support those infected in both urban and rural areas, and under-resourced indigenous populations are dying at disproportionately high rates. For ethnic groups with only a few thousand people remaining, the deaths of their elders also signifies a loss of their culture and heritage. 

SIREJ is raising funds to send to the indigenous Bolivian communities we collaborate with who are suffering from COVID-19

The money will be used to purchase critical medicines, PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), and to hire medical personnel. For every $20 we raise , one basic COVID medical kit will be provided for a person living in any of the indigenous communities we are working with.

Bolivia has the highest percentage of indigenous people in South America, yet they are systematically disadvantaged and constantly fighting for their right to land, autonomy, and livelihood. Issues such as deforestation and natural resource extraction are a constant threat. We founded SIREJ after a trip to Bolivia during which students met and collaborated with indigenous leaders, community organizers, artisans and musicians, and were inspired by their stories of perseverance and respect for the environment. We now work with local partners from the Monkox, Guarayo, Ayoreo, and Guarani indigenous groups in the eastern region of Bolivia near the Amazon rainforest. Last summer and fall was an extremely challenging period of time for many communities due to the massive wildfires that ravaged the Amazon and threatened their territories. More fires are expected this July through September as well, which would be a tragedy for the communities, local biodiversity and climate change.

SIREJ Bolivia is raising funds to send to the indigenous Bolivian communities we collaborate with who are suffering from COVID-19. In addition to soliciting direct financial donations, we are also hosting an online auction and creating an online Fundraising Store. One hundred percent of the proceeds will be sent directly to our partner, CEJIS , a local Bolivian non-governmental organization distributing resources to the communities affected by COVID-19. The money will be used to purchase critical medicines, PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), and to hire medical personnel. Apoyo COVID19 para los pueblos originarios de Bolivia


SIREJ (Estudiantes por los derechos indígenas y justicia ambiental) es una organización con sede en Oregon (EE.UU) que aboga por los derechos de las comunidades indígenas en Bolivia. 

Bolivia tiene el porcentaje más alto de poblaciones indígenas en Sudamérica, sin embargo, estas comunidades están sistemáticamente desfavorecidas y luchan constantemente por sus derechos a la tierra, la autonomía y el sustento. Cuestiones como la deforestación y el extractivismo de recursos naturales son una amenaza constante. Nuestra organización, SIREJ, fue fundada después de un viaje a Bolivia durante el cual los estudiantes se reunieron y colaboraron con líderes indígenas, organizaciones comunales, artesanas(os) y músicos, inspirados en sus historias de perseverancia y respeto por el medio ambiente. Ahora trabajamos con socios locales de los grupos indígenas Monkox, Guarayo, Ayoreo y Guaraní, ubicados en las tierras bajas de la región oriental de Bolivia cerca al bosque amazónico. El verano y otoño del año pasado fue un periodo extremadamente difícil para muchas de esas comunidades debido a los incendios masivos que arrasaron la Amazonia y amenazaron sus territorios, y se teme más incendios significativos entre julio y septiembre de este año, que sería trágico para las comunidades, la biodiversidad y el cambio climático. 



Bolivia se encuentra ahora en un estado de emergencia debido a la pandemia del COVID-19. Sin el acceso fácil a los centros de salud, la falta de equipo de protección personal y alimentos, y una recesión económica cada vez mayor, las comunidades indígenas expuestas al virus están sufriendo enormemente. El país no tiene los recursos, ni la infraestructura suficiente para apoyar a las personas infectadas tanto en zonas urbanas como rurales, y las poblaciones indígenas con escasos recursos están muriendo a tasas desproporcionadamente altas. Para los grupos étnicos con sólo unos pocos miles de personas restantes, la muerte de sus ancianos también significa la pérdida de su cultura y herencia.



SIREJ está recaudando fondos para enviar a las comunidades indígenas bolivianas que sufren de COVID-19. Además de solicitar donaciones financieras directas, también estamos organizando una subasta virtual y estamos creando una "Tienda de Recaudación de Fondos" en línea. Cien por ciento de los ingresos serán enviados directamente a nuestro socio, CEJIS, una organización no gubernamental boliviana que está apoyando a las comunidades afectadas por el COVID-19. El dinero se utilizará para comprar medicamentos necesarios para combatir COVID19, EPI (Equipo de Protección Personal), y para contratar a personal de salud.
