Blantyre Malawi: COVID-19 Relief to QECH

Like many countries around the world, Malawi is struggling to stop the spread of COVID-19 and to provide care to those who have been infected with this virus.  While Malawi was able to largely combat the initial wave and drive numbers down to very low levels, the second wave, likely driven by the highly infectious new variant, is hitting the country hard.   To date (January 20th), Malawi has had 13,880 people test positive for COVID-19 and of these, 336 have died.  As of today, there are 7,207 active cases. Of all districts, Blantyre has been hit the hardest.  Severe cases are being managed at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, one of the largest public hospitals in Malawi.  

While these numbers may seem small compared to other regions of the world, they are overwhelming the Malawian health system.  COVID-19 wards are filling, clients are being turned away for testing due to inadequate test kits, and medical professionals are working exhausting shifts with inadequate PPE and medical equipment.  


While Music Against Malaria typically raises money for treatment of severe pediatric malaria,  COVID-19 has become a national emergency and hospitals are in need of support.  Therefore, we are seeking to raise funds for Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital's COVID-19 response.  Talented Malawian medical professionals are able to provide high quality care to patients but are often in need of equipment and support to do so.  We understand that priorities for QECH include:


1. Medical equipment needed by the hospital to provide care (patient monitors, oxygen concentrators, CPAPs, ventilators, endotrachial tubes, suction machines, etc)
2. PPE (N95 masks, gloves, face shields, etc.)
3.Food support for Malawian front line workers  who work day and night to provide care to COVID-19 patients.
