Apart from the serious implications the coronavirus has had on people’s health, it has also brought social and economic crises affecting all groups of people. In Uganda, private transportation, including motorcycle taxis (known in Uganda as boda bodas), were banned for a couple of months to slow down the spread of the virus. While that was an effective public health policy for COVID, it affected people economically and otherwise, as shown in these articles here and here .
Boda bodas are the most popular form of transportation in Uganda and are the second largest employer of people. This means that a lot of drivers and their families were affected by this ban. The good news is, a few days ago, Uganda lifted the private transportation ban. However, drivers and their families are still recovering from four months of lost income. Many of them had to sell any assets they had in order to feed their families.
Asaak, Uganda's first digital lender, works directly with boda boda drivers, helping them buy motorcycles on credit enabling them to run a profitable business.
With money raised in the campaign, Asaak will purchase essential goods for our boda boda drivers and their families. This will help them tremendously as life is starting to return to normal. We call on YOU to help us push this campaign and make life easier for Ugandans.
Thank you for all of your support!
