COVID-19 India Ventilator Development Project

UPDATE: We are very excited to announce that this project has been approved by Social Alpha (https://www.socialalpha.org/) and all funds raised for this project will be matched by them dollar for dollar up to a limit of about $32,000 (Rs 25 Lakhs). Social Alpha is a leading foundation for innovation and social entrepreneurship in India and we are pleased to have their support.

We are all aware of the serious challenges our society and economy are facing currently due to the global COVID-19 outbreak.

As has tragically happened elsewhere in the world, it is very likely that in the next few weeks and months the Indian hospital systems will become overwhelmed with critical COVID-19 patients.  To save precious lives suffering from respiratory challenges due to COVID-19 infection, the Indian hospitals are going to need a huge volume of Mechanical Ventilators in a very short time and at a low cost!

To address the global need, some large global companies have begun initiatives to ramp-up ventilator production.  However, those companies make full-featured ICU Ventilators which have many advanced functions that are not required for over 80% of the COVID patients. The cost of such ventilators is over$5000 each.  And, in addition, none of these medically approved companies is Indian, and they predominantly rely on foreign supply chains.

Top-notch engineers from Timetooth Technologies (http://www.timetooth.com/) have been contributing voluntary efforts in the last few days & weeks to develop a rugged low-cost basic-feature ventilator based on open-source designs of academic projects from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Florida.

The key features of the Timetooth ventilator design are:

     1.  AC Powered automated ventilator with Assist Control of Tidal Volume,
breaths per minute control, PEEP control,

and Manual override in case of power loss
     2. Low Cost ( about 15% of the cost of Traditional ICU ventilators)
     3. Rugged and reliable design for rough field usage, with all critical features,
             and usable in remote villages
and simple hospitals
     4. Made (Designed and Manufactured) in India

The Timetooth engineering team seeks financial support to deploy dedicated resources for fast-paced, war-footing development of these low-cost ventilators, as well as for the physical prototyping, testing, and approvals.

The money from this Fundraiser will be used for:

     1.  Timetooth Technologies Engineering Design
     2.  Prototype manufacturing & Qualification Testing
     3.  Certification from Indian regulatory bodies
     4.  Identification and Sourcing of indigenous suppliers
     5. Quality Assurance Plan preparation
     6. Design Release and manufacturer tooling support

All the above activities need to happen in a very short time period. Hence, we seek urgent initial support of about $50,000.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
This effort is being led by TimeTooth Technologies, an Engineering Solutions company in India with a record of rapidly delivering engineered products,  in consultation with medical doctors.

The Timetooth engineering team has developed a Medical Robotic Exoskeleton for the rehabilitation of paraplegics. The product is already under clinical trials in hospitals in India. Over the last decade, Timetooth engineers have also developed various high-performance mission-critical systems for the Indian Defence (DRDO) and Space (ISRO) programs. Drawing from this experience and their military/medical grade engineering expertise, Timetooth engineers are confident in developing a ventilator for COVID-19 patients.  Doctors, including an ICU Intensivist, from India and abroad, are actively advising on this project including the necessary medical specifications for the ventilator being designed.   Such ventilators are urgently needed in bulk for the current COVID-19 crisis as well as long term for use in resource-limited settings.

This particular fund-raiser is being sponsored by Girish (a Co-founder of TimeTooth) and Andrew (a friend in the United States) until a non-profit can be formed or found for this effort.  All money raised, minus any credit card fees, will be transferred to Timetooth Technologies for this specific project.
