Covid-19 Education, Advocacy, and Reconnection

COVID-19 Education, Advocacy, and Reconnection to Healthcare for Isolated Non-English Speaking Elders in Minneapolis and St. Paul.
Like other parts of the US, the novel coronavirus, mirroring other health inequalities, impacts Minnesota’s Black and Hispanic residents disproportionately. The population breakdown shows the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 in Minnesota: Blacks 23% of the cases, 7% of the population; Hispanics 20% of the cases, 6% of the population; and Asians 5% of cases, and 4% of the population. The elders, specifically the non-English speaking, in these communities are infected even more disproportionately. This has been exacerbated as many of these communities live in the areas impacted by the civil unrest following the murder of George Floyd.

We need your help to fund trained bilingual culturally competent interpreters to provide education, advocacy and reconnect elder members in our Minneapolis and St. Paul communities with healthcare, basic needs, and services.
These members of our community do not have access or know how to use technology to connect with their healthcare providers for critical monitoring appointments as well as COVID-19 support and understanding. They are at great risk as they face isolation, adverse health effects, lack of access to goods and services, and language barriers.
We will hire local interpreters who typically provide these services but have been unemployed due to the reduction of in-person healthcare services during the coronavirus pandemic. Interpreters will:
- Provide culturally competent and understood COVID-19 support and communication
- Ensure current health needs of elderly community members are managed by reconnecting them to their healthcare teams
- Connect and facilitate elders so that they can access resources such as groceries and pharmacies which have been destroyed by recent civil unrest.
Who are we?
We are Global Language Connections. A small, Black-owned, women-owned business located on East Lake Street in Minneapolis, Minnesota. We provide language and cross-cultural services in more than 100 languages for healthcare, education, the legal system, government, and businesses in the Twin Cities area.
The Campaign
We are seeking $50,000 to compensate our trained interpreters to assist elder immigrant community members in accessing immediately needed basic services such as food and healthcare, in the wake of the recent civil unrest in Minneapolis and St. Paul communities. Interpreters will also assist these community members in accessing COVID-19-related healthcare services.
We will provide updates on how the funds are being used and the impact they are having on the community.
