This fundraiser is on behalf of Micah Opondo, who is looking to provide food, COVID-19 prevention kits, and tree nursery kits to vulnerable families facing hunger in his community in Oyugis, Kenya.
Here is how Micah describes the situation and needs of his community:
This is an appeal to help to save lives of the most vulnerable in Oyugis township of Homabay county in Kenya.
The long rains season has struck Oyugis with a high amount of rainfall which has resulted in flooding at unprecedented levels. People were forced to abandon their homes for higher grounds and temporarily shelter in schools and places of worship after the floods invaded homes and destroyed the little food-stock they had.
The pandemic numbers are rising and has since reached the rural areas, and with it, fear and desperation. The floods have somewhat subsided and the families are mostly back to their homes. The flipside of this is that the families are out of the limelight and therefore government and local authorities do not put them in focus for assistance.
Community members are currently unable to secure the menial jobs that many relied on for daily bread. The few who were employed have since been laid off plunging the community’s economy into a serious economic doomsday.
This is an appeal to help 100 families most impacted. The focus is on families mostly headed by women with minimal or none existent support from husbands and the elderly in the community who now rely on well wishers for their daily meals.
I have initiated an activity involving members of the community where I do home visits (safety measures observed) helping them start tree nurseries. Whenever I am in the homes, I take also time to disseminate information on COVID-19 and how we can stay and keep safe. Resources for this activity comes from my personal savings which is fast depleting.
Your contribution will help provide:
1. Food
2. COVID-19 prevention: face masks, hand sanitizer, water containers, and soap
3. COVID-19 prevention: informative flyers with clear, accurate information
4. Tree nursery set up: seedlings and planting kit
A little bit about Micah's leadership within his community:
For several years, Micah has mobilized his community's environmental efforts through a tree planting and community training program. His aim is to spread environmental conservation efforts and to teach his community of the importance of forests for a healthy climate, using Pachamama Alliance programs to bolster these efforts. He has also helped establish tree nurseries and forest management education throughout his community.

The impact Micah has had on him community is incredible. Micah and his team of volunteers have established tree nurseries in at least 5 different schools in Homabay County, and has planted over 10,000 trees in 5 communities.

This fundraiser is intended to support Micah's ongoing efforts to provide his community members the tools to address the environmental issues facing their community while simultaneously addressing their most immediate need for food and COVID-19 aid.
Please consider supporting Micah so he can continue this critical work.
Thank you.
