The Dr. Ala Stanford Center for Health Equity (ASHE) was formed in response to the needs of the underserved communities in Philadelphia, PA. ASHE was conceived from the experience of the Black Doctors COVID-19 Consortium (BDCC). BDCC was created in March 2020 in response to the disproportionate number of African-Americans being diagnosed and dying from coronavirus, and the lack of swift intervention to mitigate disease spread. The mission of BDCC is to educate, provide advocacy, and barrier-free coronavirus testing and vaccination in an effort to decrease the morbidity and mortality associated with the disease. BDCC has been integral in increasing the number of African-Americans vaccinated against coronavirus. In fact, Philadelphia has the highest percentage of vaccinations of African-Americans in any large urban area (City of Philadelphia, City Council Report, September 2021). We understood that a continuum of care and access to quality medical services was necessary in the midst of the pandemic and one that would extend long after the containment of COVID-19.

African Americans are being diagnosed at a disproportionately higher rate than other groups and are dying from coronavirus at a higher rate than other groups. To address that need, the Black Doctors COVID19 Consortium was born. We have built a mobile COVID-19 testing operation. Our goal with the mobile unit is to provide a testing alternative that is BARRIER FREE to test for coronavirus disease in our hardest-hit areas in Philadelphia.
All funds will go to cover the following expenses for 1-year:
1. Van Transportation
2. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
3. Educational Materials
4. Testing Supplies
5. Staff support
6. PPE for those being tested
7. Supporting a sustainable program to improve health outcomes.
We are testing for the virus with an FDA-approved system of nasal swabs and conducting antibody testing. We are also providing free flu shots and vaccinations.
