COVID Relief for Oakland Immigrant Families

Donation protected
Dear community,

At Roosevelt Middle School in Oakland, we work with a dynamic, spunky, and ever-growing group of Newcomer students. Newcomers are students who have recently moved to the United States and are learning English as a second (or in many cases, third!) language.  While we have students from all over the world, a majority of our students have recently immigrated from Central America (Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador).

We are raising relief funds to help these recent immigrant families with basic needs during the time of Coronavirus.  As we all know, many people have lost work due to public health concerns and the current Shelter in Place order. Our families are among the most vulnerable at this time, as undocumented immigrants are not eligible to apply for essential financial benefits such as Unemployment or Paid Family Leave.  So, our families are struggling to find ways to pay for food, medicine, phone service, and most of all, rent.

Of course, this is a time of huge uncertainty and there are lots of important causes in this difficult moment. If you are able to donate any amount, it would be greatly appreciated by our families.

-Sincerely,
Roosevelt Middle School Newcomer Team
