COVID Mali- Education hub for changemakers

COVID Mali Intro video

Prodigium Pictures Making a Better Now

This is the story of 12 designers, engineers, teachers, and changemakers who came together in the midst of a pandemic to help our local community in Bamako. COVID Mali (www.covidmali.org) is a makerspace startup based in Bamako, Mali. We have a consortium of engineers working to slow the spread of COVID-19 in Bamako, Mali, through prototyping and producing locally-sourced PPE and medical equipment with resources available in-country, while also referring to endorsed solutions, designs, and knowledge we've picked up from our team members in the U.S. So far, we have built a negative-pressure ventilator, a UPS battery for powering enough electricity to keep up WiFi, and vacuum-molded masks- all with dwindling resources, less access to 3D printers, and mostly supplies which we had before the pandemic started. So far we have raised almost $5,000 through crowdfunding and most recently winning the COVID-19 Student Action Fund, but we still need your help.

In the long-term, our group will outfit our makerspace with the appropriate supplies to help equip our Bamako community with tools for when disasters like COVID-19 strike again and again. If COVID Mali can transform into a makerspace with standardized training, our makers like Aissa and Ruth can become trained professionals teaching curriculum to young professionals and students in Bamako. Our designers including Koffi and our teachers such as Bakary can exercise their skills in academia, teaching young minds about the benefits of additive manufacturing and architecture while also collaborating with accredited universities in the U.S. Our team is built upon education and passion to learn. We can build more sustainable solutions and creat resilient communities with locally-sourced materials, and train our local staff on running machines and programs like autoCAD, 3D printers, CNC milling machines, and electronic devices.
