My name is Zahirah, and I’m an independent artist and single parent. This month alone, I’ve had three serious allergic reactions, including one just this past weekend that required an overnight hospital stay. Each incident has taken a toll physically, emotionally, and financially.

As someone who is self-employed, I don’t have paid time off or a financial safety net. These unexpected medical emergencies have brought on significant expenses ambulance rides, hospital bills, and lost income from missed work and projects. On top of that, I’m the sole caregiver for my youngest child, which adds an extra layer of responsibility and urgency.
