We are New York City law students working with the Taxi Worker Defense Collective (TWDC). We provide pro bono representation for low-income taxi and rideshare drivers facing summons from the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC).

Our client makes a living as a rideshare driver. Earlier this year, he was targeted and ticketed by an undercover officer at JFK Airport. The officer approached our client, who was dropping off a passenger, and urgently requested a ride to LaGuardia Airport. He repeated that he needed to get to LaGuardia and offered cash. After our client agreed to help, the officer issued a summons with a $2,000 penalty for operating a for-hire vehicle without a proper license. The officer never entered our client’s vehicle and had no intention of taking a ride.

We successfully negotiated the fine down to $500. Still, this reduced amount places a serious financial burden on our client. Making matters worse, the TLC requires immediate payment or will suspend his license. Like many hardworking drivers supporting themselves and their families, our client was caught in an abusive enforcement practice that preys on vulnerable workers.

We are raising $500 to cover our client’s settlement. Any funds beyond this goal will support the TWDC’s mutual aid fund, helping other drivers facing similar circumstances. Please donate what you can and share this fundraiser.
