Hi, my name is Liv and this is my 2 year old cat Onyx. I’m raising funds to help cover the costs of onyx’s expensive medical bills.
Onyx’s medical story
6 months ago, Onyx had been diagnosed with a urinary tract infection. The vet had found crystals forming within his urine, as well as traces of blood. Despite the treatment, his condition didn’t seem to improve significantly. Besides his excessive grooming, Onyx didn’t show any signs of discomfort, so I continued treatment as prescribed. A month later, I was startled when Onyx suddenly began screaming in pain. I instantly rushed him to the animal hospital, where they discovered he was experiencing a life-threatening urinary blockage. He required immediate surgery, the implantation of a catheter, and was admitted as an Inpatient for 4 days. Once he was discharged from the hospital, I followed his prescribed treatment as directed, but the blood in his urine didn’t clear up after the 2 week time frame. 4 weeks had passed since his surgery, so I brought him back to the hospital. He was prescribed more medications, but once again they were ineffective. 2 more weeks had passed without results, so the veterinarian requested another follow up appointment. On the way to the hospital, Onyx and I got into a nearly fatal car crash with a reckless driver running a red light. The front end of my car was completely destroyed, missing us only by a few feet. Thankfully we were ok, but between the time it took for the emergency responders to assess the scene and my car getting towed, we didn’t make it to the appointment. Ironically, the traces of blood in Onyx’s urine completely disappeared the next day.
between the numerous blood work tests, X-rays, medical procedures, medication, overnight hospitalization, and appointment fees, I have accumulated nearly $5000 of debt. On top of that, Onyx is required to be on a strict diet of costly prescription food ($68/month) for the rest of his life, in order to prevent the formation of urine crystals.
As a full time student, it has been incredibly challenging to recover from this financially. I hardly make enough income to cover the living expenses of Onyx and myself. My parents won’t help with his bills, insisting that I give him away if I can’t afford it. But I can’t. Onyx is my world, I love him more than anything. He is the sweetest cat, and loves me with all his heart.
I’ve been by Onyx’s side his entire life, raising him since he was a kitten Everywhere I go, he’s following right behind me. When I’m out late at night he stays awake, looking out the window and waiting for me to come home. Whenever I’m asleep, sick, or sad, he refuses to leave my side. Whenever he’s scared, he calls out to me for help and feels safe in my arms. When I play with him he gets so excited that he puffs up like a kitten. Even when I give him baths, clip his nails, give him medicine, etc. despite his complaining he always trusts in my intentions and never holds a grudge. The bond I share with Onyx is incredibly special and unconditional. To lose him would be as if I lost a piece of my heart.
