Cover the Cost of Emergency Surgery for Lola

Donation protected
A few weeks ago, good friends of ours, Kelly and Yorgos, faced a moment that every pet parent dreads. After playing down at Jamaica Pond and going for a walk, Lola began acting strangely and didn’t seem well.

As some of you reading this might know, Kelly and Yorgos have also run into unfortunate circumstances which have kept Yorgos in Cyprus and away from Kelly and Lola in Boston.

After some monitoring, Kelly made the decision to take Lola to Angell Medical Center’s emergency department. It was there that veterinarians gave both Yorgos (by phone, at nearly 3am in Cyprus) and Kelly the news that Lola was bleeding internally from a somewhat unknown cause. Without surgery, doctors would be unable to both understand exactly why Lola was internal bleeding and stop the hemorrhaging. Given that, Yorgos and Kelly made the decision to proceed with surgery.

The good news is that Lola did well through surgery and was able to return home with Kelly a couple of days following! The bad news is that, unfortunately, the bleeding was caused by the rupture of a cancerous tumor on her splene caused by hemangiocarcoma, a splenic cancer in dogs.

For those that know Yorgos, Kelly, and Lola, I’m sure one of the first things you are reminded of in all three of them is goodness of heart. Lola has been one of the most special dogs I’ve met. I’ve seen that Yorgos, having cared for Lola through so much, would do anything for her (and Kelly!) And Kelly, one of the kindest and most thoughtful people I know has been taking care of Lola night and day as Yorgos has been unable to be in Boston.

As you can imagine, not being able to be together, Yorgos not being able to be by Lola and Kelly’s sides, has been very difficult. On top of that challenge comes the hard fact that, financially, just two to three days in the hospital for Lola (including assessment, surgery, bloodwork, imaging, medicine) has cost upwards of $10,000.

With a full understanding that everyone’s financial situation is different, I’m asking anyone who is able to donate (anything - even just $3-5) to send some love in financial form to help offset the sudden and unexpected cost Yorgos and Kelly incurred through all of this. Kelly and Yorgos being the people they are, I know wholeheartedly, would rally for those around them if needed, so let’s support them now!
