The CoVent Challenge is the creation of 13 resident physicians, advisors and several sponsoring organizations who have come together to create lasting solutions to the ventilator supply crisis made infamous by the COVID-19 pandemic. As experts in mechanical ventilation and as those serving on the frontlines to treat patients impacted by COVID-19, they created the CoVent-19 Challenge to develop low-cost, rapidly manufacturable solutions to support heavily burdened modern medical facilities in the US and abroad. CoVent’s goal is to close the gap between our actual resources and those in need around the world.
- The CoVent-19 Challenge is an open innovation 12-week Grand Challenge for engineers, innovators, designers, and makers. The Challenge launched on the GrabCAD Challenges platform on April 1, 2020.
- The general admission round resulted in over 213 ventilator entries from 43 countries! Seven teams were invited to participate in the invite-only finalist round (details below).
- The invited teams are receiving access to additional resources for completing their ventilator designs from experts at Stratasys, Ximedica, Valispace and Sonos, and support in developing functional prototypes, including testing platforms, test lungs, and testing protocols.
- The prototypes will be evaluated using a testing platform provided by ADInstruments to determine which design provides the best combination of performance against safety, reliability, manufacturability, affordability, and simplicity.
- The final ventilator prototypes are due to CoVent on June 21st and will then be evaluated by a team of expert medical and technical panelists to select one ventilator for production.

CoVent Challenge Finalists
Baxter Ventilator- (Portland, ME), submitted by a team of educators, students, and alumni from Baxter Academy for Technology and Science.
CORE Vent- (Edinburgh, Scotland), submitted by Armadilla Ltd, a family-run business, who recently won the Queen’s Innovation Award.
VOX: InVent Pneumatic Ventilator- (San Francisco, CA, and Seattle, WA), submitted by fuseproject, a design and innovation firm, Cionic, a medical device technology company, and a group of independent engineers from Seattle.
Lung Evolve-(Bogotá and Medellín, Colombia), submitted by an engineering team from the Universidad Nacional and Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana.
OP Vent- (Santa Clara, Palo Alto, and Mountain View, CA) submitted by a team from Nvidia, Waymo, Stanford University, and VA Palo Alto Health Care System.
RespiraWorks- (US and Guatemala), submitted by a global team of dozens of engineers, healthcare workers and other professionals with a focus on developing countries and low-resource communities.
SmithVent- (Northampton, MA), submitted by a team of Smith College engineering alumni and friends.
What We Can Achieve Together
The funds raised in this campaign will be used for the development and production of winning ventilators from CoVent-19 Challenge. Specific expenses include prototyping, testing, production tooling, legal, regulatory and labor expenses. In addition to significant in-kind donations from our sponsoring companies, we estimate a total pre-production budget of $250,000. We are targeting a first build production cost of $2,500 USD per ventilator, which is 10x less than prices of commercially available ICU ventilators. Future high volume builds will target a ventilator production cost of $1,000 to $1,500 USD.
After the challenge, we are working with a medical device company to assist and advise on the ventilator development and help ensure compliance with all required standards prior to filing for the FDA Emergency Use Authorization.
The distribution of ventilator units will be need-based. International distribution will require recognition of the regulating body's authorization in the target country.
We will also make the winning design files available royalty-free to those around the world with the capacity and resources to manufacture the winning ventilator design.
