Please help this amazing domestic violence survivor and advocate continue her fight for complete freedom from her attacker. She desperately needs help paying her legal fees to complete her divorce, restraining order, and bankruptcy. She also needs help further securing her home; her abuser broke the backyard gate and the garage door during and after the attack. Due to COVID, Courtney’s side gigs have been hurt and she needs help financially.
On October 31, 2018, Courtney’s life was forever changed by a brutal attack carried out by her soon-to-be ex husband. Courtney immediately retained counsel and filed for a divorce and restraining order, but 627 days later, her divorce and restraining order are not final. This has left her with new legal fees to continue the effort to divorce, make the restraining order permanent, and now file for bankruptcy.
Courtney's divorce attorney, George Horrigan, is fighting for her diligently and promised to make her initial retainer last as long as possible. More than 20 months later and countless hearings, meetings, and attempts at negotiation, he has delivered on his promise. Sadly, to go forward, he is requiring another $5,000 to continue fighting for Courtney's divorce and restraining order. Because her ex is fighting (unnecessarily) every step of the way, Mr. Horrigan will now be asking the courts for a mandatory divorce order on 8/20/20, meaning Courtney could finally be divorced on that day if she receives funding. Mr. Horrigan will also be asking the court for a later date to address the financial burdens her ex left her with which will probably not take place for another year with the current court calendar.
Because Courtney has not received any settlement money to cover the tens of thousands of dollars racked up in debt by her ex, she is trying to file bankruptcy as soon as possible to free herself from the financial control he still has over her. She has selected Mr. Patrick Kavanagh to represent her in her bankruptcy that will cost her $2,000.
It is unknown if Courtney will ever receive any amount of settlement from her ex as he is facing four felonies and potential jail-time for his crimes. She has resisted filing bankruptcy as long as she can, but time has run out.
If by any chance extra money is raised, her ex broke the garage door and side gate before he left and for security reasons, we had to bolt them shut. She could use the funds to replace those items, along with her stove, which he kicked and damaged on his way out. It is a sore reminder every day she enters the kitchen.
Please consider helping this incredibly strong woman continue to fight her abuser in court. Let us not leave this survivor alone in this battle for her complete freedom.
