Every child deserves a place where they can feel safe, calm and ready to learn. At Courtlands School, we are privileged to support incredible children with Special Educational Needs (SEN), each with their own unique strengths, challenges, and potential. For many of our pupils, the world can often feel overwhelming. Everyday sights, sounds, and experiences that others take for granted can create anxiety, distress, and barriers to learning.
We want to change that.
We are seeking support to build a state-of-the-art Dark Sensory Room. This is a specialist environment designed to provide therapeutic sensory experiences in a safe, controlled, and calming space. This facility will transform the daily lives of our pupils, helping them regulate emotions, reduce anxiety, improve communication skills, and engage more fully in education.
Why a Dark Sensory Room Matters.
A dark sensory room uses carefully designed lighting, sounds, textures, and interactive technology to create an immersive environment tailored to the needs of children with autism, sensory processing difficulties, profound and multiple learning disabilities, and other additional needs.
The room will provide opportunities for pupils to:
• Develop communication and interaction skills
• Improve focus and concentration
• Reduce stress, anxiety, and sensory overload
• Build confidence and independence
• Experience joy, relaxation, and emotional wellbeing
• Access therapeutic support in a way that feels engaging and meaningful.
For some children, this room will be the first place where they feel completely comfortable and able to engage with the world around them.
Our Vision
We aim to create a cutting-edge sensory environment featuring:
• Interactive fibre-optic lighting
• Immersive projection systems
• Sensory wall panels
• Bubble tubes and calming visual displays
• Specialist sound and music equipment
• Soft, safe sensory furnishings
• Customisable sensory experiences tailored to individual needs
This will be a space that inspires curiosity, promotes wellbeing, and supports learning every single day.
How You Can Help
Building this specialist facility requires significant investment, and we cannot achieve it alone.
Your donation, whether large or small, will directly contribute to creating a transformative resource that will benefit generations of children at Courtlands School.
• £50 could contribute towards sensory resources.
• £250 could help fund specialist lighting equipment.
• £1,000 could support the installation of interactive sensory technology.
• Larger donations and corporate sponsorships could fund major elements of the room and leave a lasting legacy for our pupils.
Make a Lasting Difference
By supporting this project, you are not simply funding a room, you are creating opportunities, building confidence, reducing barriers, and helping children reach their full potential.
Together, we can create a space where every child feels understood, supported, and empowered to thrive.
Thank you for helping us bring this vision to life.
